The demon lord Diablo is the namesake of one of the largest game franchises in the world. Now Diablo 4 is coming – and the boss is not in the game. So why does the game still bear his name? MeinMMO explains.
Why is Diablo 4 called that? The short answer would be: for recognition. Diablo stands not only for the character but also for the game itself. When veteran players read: “A new Diablo is coming”, they know:
- I can slash countless monsters
- Tough bosses make my hell hot
- There will be hours of grind
- Looting and leveling!
What distinguishes Diablo from other games in the hack ‘n’ slash genre is the traditionally dark, bloody Gothic style. That’s why the game is called Diablo 4, even if Diablo himself does not appear, but the demoness Lilith is the main antagonist.
Since many players are just starting with the series with Diablo 4, the question of the supreme evil has come up several times. Who is Diablo anyway – and will we see him in Diablo 4?

Who is Diablo? The titular demon has been the final boss of each part of Diablo since the first installment, except for Diablo Immortal, at least in the base game. The expansions often brought in other end bosses like Baal or Malthael.
What defines Diablo is that he is the “supreme evil” or wants to be, the worst of the demon lords who all stand for some kind of sin or negative emotion. Diablo is the lord of terror and is considered one of the hardest bosses in the game.
As such, he is immensely powerful and is continually brought back to life, often by servants or cultists. Some also try to claim his power for themselves by using his remains as an artifact.
As a demon, he cannot really die but is continuously reborn in Hell. The angel Malthael tried to prevent this, and as a result wiped out 90% of mankind.

Will we see Diablo in Diablo 4? Strictly speaking, Diablo is already in the game, at least partly (and literally). Lilith is holding the skull of the supreme evil in her hands, presumably using it as a magical artifact.
Whether she will attempt to resurrect Diablo or even kill him for good is still unknown. For now, the lord of hell will not be in the game, but that is not excluded in later seasons or expansions.
