Who likes “Vikings” should not miss a series on Netflix

The German historical series Barbarians revolves around the famous Battle of the Teutoburg Forest between the Germans and the Roman army. If you’re already fans of Vikings, the Netflix production might be just right for you.

Barbarians is a German Netflix production, originally dubbed in German and Latin. The first season was released in 2020, followed by season 2 in October 2022.

After release, opinions on the series were mixed, but overall, Barbarians performs well among viewers, according to user ratings (as of November 10, 2023):

• On IMDb, Barbarians achieves an average of 7.2 stars from 29,353 ratings.
• On Rotten Tomatoes, the average Tomatometer is at 86%.

The focus is on the Battle of the Teutoburg Forest between Germans and Romans

What is Barbarians about? The series is set in the year 9 AD and revolves around the bloody fight of the Roman army against Germanic tribes that are also feuding among themselves.

It centers on three childhood friends whose fates and experiences are told in the shadow of the impending great battle:

• Arminius, son of the Cherusci prince Segimer, who lived among the Romans since childhood
• Folkwin Wolfspeer, a Cherusci warrior
• Thusnelda, daughter of the Cherusci prince Segestes

The series deals with the Battle of the Teutoburg Forest, also known as the Hermann Battle, a historical event, similar to how the series Vikings dealt with the semi-historical/mythical figure Ragnar Lothbrok.

At the center are the conflicts between powerful adversaries that escalate into epic battles and bloody fight scenes, just as it happened in the Viking series.
