How did the MyMMO list go last year?
Last year, MyMMO author Alexander Leitsch had the pleasure of predicting the death of MMORPGs. In many cases, he missed the mark, but there were also two hits that Alexander managed to achieve.
Along the way, she has made many detours into The Elder Scrolls Online, New World, Blade & Soul, World of Warcraft, and other MMORPGs. For 2024, she is particularly eyeing Blue Protocol and Throne and Liberty.
Where was he right?
Crowfall was released in 2021. Instead of a permanent world, there were various campaigns that ran for a limited time. The successes in the campaigns took players into the social realm of Eternal Kingdoms, where housing and trade were at stake.
Since the end of November 2022, the game has been offline and Alexander thought that the game would not be brought back online. So far, he has been right.
He had a resounding hit with Swords of Legends. This MMORPG from China, which was also released in 2021, focused on dungeons, PvP content, and housing.
After severely declining player numbers, the servers closed on June 30, 2023. They were the official reason why the development team had to cease operation of the game.
We will probably have to say goodbye to the MMORPG Crowfall:
Which games have survived, even though things are going badly for them?
Rift has been a constant candidate for closure for several years. Already in 2020, the MMORPG was a hot candidate for server closure, yet it continues to linger from year to year.
Rebirth Online is a similar case, having been around since 2021. The MMORPG struggles with weak player numbers and has been crawling on the brink of shutdown for years. It could also be that an end is in sight.
The status of New Frontier or its successor Magnificent 5 is unclear. The official site is lit up with “Play Now” and Magnificent 5 is still supposed to come out “soon”. However, there has been no new information about the MMO in the past year. Both titles are no longer available in the Steam store, but there is still no official confirmation of development being halted. Alexander might receive half a point for this.
Which games are better than expected?
Rainbow Six: Extraction is struggling with low player numbers, but the title can still stay afloat. On Steam, there have only been an average of 69 players in the last 30 days. However, we do not know how the numbers look on the Ubisoft launcher or on consoles.
In 2023, the game was supplied with a new crisis event every quarter. While these are events from the previous year, the title has managed to save itself from server closure so far.
However, there are also some MMOs and MMORPGs that we can look forward to in 2024. If you want to know which titles are coming out this year, you should check out the recommendations from MyMMO: The 5 most promising new MMORPGs for 2024 and beyond
