EverQuest Next is an upcoming MMORPG from Daybreak Game Company (formerly Sony Online Entertainment). It is not a successor to EverQuest 1 and 2, but more a reboot of the franchise. EQN takes place in a parallel world of Norrath, although with a familiar face or two – fundamentally, it is an independent story.
The developers have set high expectations and want to create a true next-gen MMO. An important component of this is the dynamic world. Through a partnership with the company Storybricks, there will be sophisticated artificial intelligence in the game. The NPCs remember what players do and respond accordingly.
Moreover, changes in Norrath will not be reset by the developers. If a race has taken over an area, that’s just how it is. If a city falls, it simply was not defended well enough. Players are therefore to blame and must live with the consequences.
How much they can ultimately uphold the promises remains to be seen, but just for the attempt, they deserve a chance. And who knows? Perhaps they will actually succeed, and we will get our “Next Big Thing“.
