In a stream, Sony finally revealed the final design of the PS5. The gaming community reacted with cheers, concerns, and plenty of memes.
What happened? In a major release stream, Sony unleashed a flood of information about their upcoming next-gen console.
The publisher showcased a range of games that will be released for the PlayStation 5. This included both large AAA titles as well as smaller indie games that covered a wide array of genres.
One of the highlights of the stream was the reveal of the final design of the PS5, which had been kept under wraps for a long time. You can watch the reveal trailer here:
Immediately after the stream, large discussions about the design erupted in the community.
Modern Design or the Next Vacuum Cleaner?
Similar to the reveal of the PS5 controller, opinions on the console’s design are sharply divided.
What the positive voices say: The positive reactions praised especially the modern and sleek look of the PS5. With this console, Sony broke a long-standing tradition of purely black designs and brought something new and fresh.
The design is bold, but I like it. It looks more innovative and fits the time (2020-2030). […]

I have to say as an Xbox “fan”: Hats off! Very bold, futuristic design […].
GamePro reader Majestic-Dream
Fans of unusual designs have found something to their taste in the PS5.
What the negative voices say: However, the design has also generated concerned reactions, mainly due to the slim form of the console. Users fear that the PS5 will again have problems with noise levels.
My fears came true. Sony is again opting for a sleek flat design. This makes me very worried that it could be as loud as a vacuum cleaner again.
MeinMMO reader Jerry
Oh no. It looked somewhat like I imagined the console would after seeing the controller for the first time. […] Only it looks very thin. I dread the worst regarding cooling.
GamePro reader Tobimon
Aside from that, the design was also not to everyone’s taste, and part of the community felt it simply does not look good. The futuristic look and the colors did not appeal to many.

What design suggestions were there? Already with the PS5 controller, the creative community showed how many of their own designs they can come up with. The same applies now to the console itself.
Right after the reveal, wishes for a black version of the PS5 arose, and several readers on MeinMMO expressed their desire for a black color option for the console in the comments:
Design-wise quite successful, even though I would wish for a completely black console in the future. It may sound silly, but I think all the batteries of technical devices (from TV to sound equipment) that one has set up in the living/sleeping or gaming room should visually match.
MeinMMO reader Millerntorian
It’s huge. And not that pretty.
It won’t fit in my gaming room if I look at its design. I fear I will have to wait for a black edition.
GamePro reader Jericho83
Users on Twitter have already posted design suggestions for a black PS5 console just hours after the reveal. Here’s how it could look:

The black Spider-Man design quickly landed on reddit and received over 7,000 upvotes there.
Whether fans of darker colors will get a PS5 version to their liking remains to be seen. But Sony has frequently released various color variations for their consoles in the past, so there is still hope for you.
PS5 Memes Flood Social Media
Both supporters and critics of the PS5 design have had a lot of fun at Sony’s and the console’s expense. Even during the presentation, a veritable flood of memes broke out on social media that poked fun at the PS5. Here are a few examples:
Best meme I’ve seen so far of the PS5.

Even though gamers have differing opinions about the Sony stream, they could still laugh together about it.
Where is the Price and Release?
Although a lot was shown at the event and the design of the console itself was introduced to the public for the first time, some information that is important to many users was missing. This includes the price of the PS5.
Even though many reactions centered around the design, users did not forget the price of the console. reddit user FinalForerunner wrote:
Are Sony and Microsoft now waiting for each other to reveal the price so they can undercut each other?
He is not alone in his opinion. The comment has already received nearly 500 upvotes, and some comments on MeinMMO say the same. This includes our reader Cameltoetem:
They are surely waiting until Microsoft makes the first move.
The exact release date of the console remains unknown and is estimated to be around the end of 2020. Sony has stated that both the price and the release of the PS5 will be announced at a later date.
