Diablo Immortal was seen as an April Fool’s joke by one person from Blizzard – back in 2018. But how does the “Red Shirt Guy 2” actually rate the mobile RPG?
Diablo Immortal has been available for a few weeks now and has been discussed up and down. While some consider the game to be a more than solid mobile adaptation of Diablo, for many others it is a Pay2Win game from loot box hell.
This is how the “April Fool’s Guy” became legendary: The BlizzCon 2018 was a rather special one for Blizzard – unfortunately not in a positive way. Diablo Immortal was announced back then and presented to a lot of PC players who were eagerly waiting for Diablo IV. The audience’s reaction was subdued, and a viewer turned himself into a legend with a question. When he was handed the microphone, he asked regarding the presentation of Diablo Immortal:
Is this a late April Fool’s joke?
The question received applause and satisfied whistles from many in the audience. The video of the incident is still popular today and is often brought up with statements like: “See? He already knew back then!”
The questioner from back then is known on the internet as “Dontinquire”. Because he also wore a red shirt like another famous questioner, he earned the nickname “Red Shirt Guy 2018”. Now, after the release of Diablo Immortal, one question arises: Has Dontinquire even played Diablo Immortal? And how does he rate it?
“Met my expectations, uninstalled it”
This is how the April Fool’s Guy rates Diablo Immortal: Fortunately, Dontinquire reports on Twitter about his gaming daily life and also mentions that he started playing Diablo Immortal. His first tweet about the game was still rather incredulous: “They really released it. Here we go …”
Just a few hours later, he explained in his next tweet:
Well, so far I am at level 20. Actually, I don’t hate it. But how “gacha” the endgame will be remains to be seen.
Almost 12 days later, Dontinquire then returned with his “extensive” review of Diablo Immortal. He explained:
Review of Diablo Immortal – It met my expectations. I uninstalled it.
Gameplay 9 out of 10 points – but progression ruins the whole game for Blizzard fans
In response to another player’s question about how he would rate Diablo Immortal on a scale from 1 to 10, Dontinquire became a bit more detailed:
I don’t know if I would rate it that way. I think in terms of actual gameplay it is a 9. It feels damn good. But then you hit daily soft caps, stupid paragon grind, you can’t complete sets, you can’t earn legendary gems, you have to be in a group for everything – it crashes down to a damn useless 0.
“It met my expectations, I uninstalled it” is probably the feeling many have had with this mobile game – at least once they reached the endgame.
Nevertheless, one cannot deny Diablo Immortal its financial success, no matter how controversial Pay2Win mechanics or the sheer possibility of spending money in the game are discussed.
What has your own experience in Diablo Immortal been like? Are you on the same wavelength as the “April Fool’s Guy” or did you have significantly more fun?
