One of the best games in the Warhammer franchise that you can currently play on Steam and PS5 is getting a new free DLC. This adds naval battles to the game 7 years after its release.
Which game is meant? The game in question is Warhammer: Vermintide 2. The co-op slasher takes place during the End Times of the Warhammer Fantasy world. The world is flooded and devastated by the Skaven, ratmen. They are reinforced by the Norscan barbarians from the far north.
You are the “Übersreik Five,” a group of heroes standing against the forces of Chaos. Together, you slash through hordes of enemies and thwart their plans by destroying, for example, a Skaven hellbell or preventing dark rituals.
Warhammer: Vermintide 2 was released on March 8, 2018, and is therefore already over 7 years old. However, it is still one of the best games for fans of Warhammer Fantasy and still receives new content – including the free DLC “Return to the Reik,” which will be released on November 20, 2025.
- All players on PC (Steam and Epic Games Store), as well as PS4/PS5 and Xbox One/Xbox Series X|S will receive the new DLC for free.

Vermintide 2 brings back an old map with a new feature
What kind of DLC is this? Return to the Reik returns players to a map from the first game. However, it was not simply copied 1:1 from its predecessor but significantly expanded. In the official dev blog of the developers, it states:
Players who know the original will find much familiar, but we have also added more side paths, revamped the terrain in various areas, incorporated more encounters, and updated the level overall to reflect the years that have passed since our last visit.
Now there are also war camps of the Norsca by the river. Additionally, enemy ships patrol the river, which you can sink with cannons. While encounters on the water already existed in the original level, they are supposed to be much more prominent and play differently in Vermintide 2.
You can now sink enemy ships from a distance with cannonballs. The ships will circle around you, requiring you to time your shots accurately to hit. This should make the battles on the water more dynamic than in the original, where fights were always decided on board your ship.
The developers emphasize that the ship cannons work differently than those you have previously used in other levels – such as when defending Fortress Brachsenbrücke. This time, players are supposed to have significantly more control, which, according to one developer, was not easy to achieve.
What is the future of the game? The developers also included a small paragraph about this in their blog: “This will not be the last map we create.” In the game, the end of the world may seem imminent, but for Vermintide 2, the time is likely far from over.
Also for Warhammer 40,000: Darktide, developer studio Fatshark has announced a new DLC. The co-op shooter will receive a new class.
