Warframe was present at the Game Awards 2025, though not with a big announcement. Instead, 12 years after release, they had a German legend from film and television explain what the game is actually about.
What a performance at the Game Awards! Warframe’s Creative Director Rebecca Ford and Community Director Meghan Everett had an appearance on stage at the Game Awards 2025. However, it wasn’t about the new update “The Old Peace”, which was released a day before the Game Awards and mentioned casually by Meghan in passing.
Shortly thereafter, Rebecca explained why they were at the Game Awards: They had given up explaining what Warframe actually is and handed the answering of this question to an outsider: Werner Herzog.

Acting legend to explain Warframe
Who is Werner Herzog? Werner Herzog is an 83-year-old actor, director, producer, and writer from Munich and is regarded as a German film and acting legend. As an actor, he appeared in films like “Beyond the Horizon” or “Jack Reacher.” As a director, he is known for works like “Nosferatu,” “Aguirre, the Wrath of God,” and “Fitzcarraldo.” He has been awarded various prizes for his achievements.
What did Herzog have to say? In the trailer for Warframe, Werner Herzog addressed the aforementioned question of what Warframe is actually about. He says:
What is Warframe?
To tread cursed through this senseless universe in living metal, haunted by dreams.Excalibur. Mag. Volt. Names that resonate with ancient purpose, now lost to them. The war for which they were created is long forgotten. And yet they awaken. Stir.
What drives them? Pure remaining instinct? Or an independent, conscious force? We do not know – but there is someone who does.
They hear their voice. A blanket against the horror. They blindly insist on humanity and its value, even in the face of utter indifference. But with so little understanding of what they have taken… what they still owe.

What does that mean? Admittedly, this is not a really meaningful explanation of what Warframe is about. In summary, Werner Herzog tells us here: The Warframes are living metal, created a long time ago for a war that no one remembers today.
That war is also the subject of the new update “The Old Peace,” which launched this week. Players take a look into the past, at the war between the Orokin and the Sentient.
How is it being received? In the comments on YouTube, the trailer is very well received. Many players hope that Werner Herzog will have a role in the game in the future. Some speculate he could be the voice of “The Indifference.”
For many players, the recent events were a good reason to start or return to Warframe – and this is also reflected in the high player numbers on Steam: Warframe’s player count is exploding on Steam, developers are struggling with the servers: “Did not expect this much”
