The military MMO War Thunder has always had great graphics. But with update 5.0 of the Dagor Engine, War Thunder is now even more beautiful. Just in time to compete with World of Tanks 1.0 on graphics and sound.
Compared to its direct competitor World of Tanks, War Thunder definitely had the upper hand in two aspects: the realistic game modes and the better graphics. When the first images of the tank battles from War Thunder were released, tank fans were quite impressed.
However, by now, World of Tanks with version 1.0 and the new Core Engine has made significant improvements. But War Thunder is not standing still and counters with version 5.0 of the Dagor Engine in update 1.77.
Prettier and wetter battlefields with Dagor 5.0
To make War Thunder beautiful again, the developers at Gaijin have packed some impressive innovations into their Dagor 5.0 engine. These include:
- Global Illumination and contact shadows for better lighting and shadow effects
- Weather effects and volumetric fog and smoke bring more immersion to the maps
- Improved anti-aliasing through Temporal Anti-Aliasing
- Among other things, Displacement Mapping has made the battlefields more lifelike, for example through puddles and uneven roads and runways.
More impact in sound!
In addition to the graphics, the sound of War Thunder is also being revamped. Each shot is now generated from multiple sound layers that cover the entire sound spectrum. Tank veterans can even determine the caliber of a firing gun from a distance based on the echo.
The effects themselves have been enhanced with additional details, such as falling shell casings or the sounds of loading mechanisms of guns. Airplane noises are now significantly more dynamic and impressive.

Modern tanks in update 1.77
The fleet of War Thunder has been expanded with several main battle tanks from the 1970s and 1980s at rank VI. The USA receives the famous M1 Abrams, Germany the Leopard 2K, Great Britain the Challenger 1, the Soviet Union the T-64B, and France the AMX-30B2 Brenus.
All have powerful armaments and armor, high speed, and excellent mobility. Particularly noteworthy are the T-64B, which can fire guided ‘Cobra’ missiles from its main gun, and the AMX-30B2 Brenus, which features multi-layer reactive armor.
German pilots can also look forward to the strategic bomber Heinkel He 177 A-5 Greif.
