A Reddit user wondered about tiny dots running across their laptop screen repeatedly. However, upon opening the device, it turned out that the problem was much larger than it initially seemed.
What was wrong with the laptop? On Reddit, the user Zestyclose-Salad-290 shows the inside of a laptop that is crawling with ants. The user mentions that the laptop owner had repeatedly wondered about solitary ants on her screen. However, no one probably expected the true extent of the infestation.
The clip garnered over 25,000 upvotes on Reddit and sparked a heated discussion with more than 1,100 comments. In the community, there is a mix of astonishment, disgust, and fascination.
Heat, Darkness, and Dust Lead to Unwanted Guests
Who has moved in? Inside her laptop, an entire colony of ants had actually taken up residence. It is quite possible that they spread unnoticed for weeks until the first ones started running across the screen.
You can marvel at the entire commotion in the related Reddit post:
Why in the laptop, of all places? Ants feel more comfortable in electronic devices than one might think. Darkness, heat, and tight spaces provide ideal conditions for the tiny insects. Laptops are often running for hours, generating heat and offering many sheltered spots inside – a perfect place to hide or even build a nest.
Especially in humid or warm environments, this can happen quickly. What is a technical device for us appears to ants as a safe, warm home with undisturbed access and exactly the temperature they need to survive.
Users Warn Not to Squash Ants
How will you get rid of the ants? It actually seems that the problem is not an isolated case, as numerous users on Reddit discuss and describe what they have done in similar situations against the pests.
Terrible-Dance-9757 reports on Reddit frustrated, “I am currently dealing with such a plague. I have never hated anything as much as them.” He tried to be polite, spraying them with alcohol to kill them quickly, but now he just crushes them.
User Kemicalkontact warns in his response on Reddit against squashing the animals. Because Pharaoh ants release a pheromone when crushed, which encourages their conspecifics to flee and establish new nests, that would only make the problem worse. Instead, he recommends luring the ants with liquid bait traps and gradually eliminating them, as conventional solutions like peanut butter traps have little effect on this species.
Another idea comes from MetallicGray (via Reddit): Leave the device open outside, and the colony will carry their eggs away. Afterwards, he recommends a pressurized air cleaning. The thread shows: heat, darkness, and tight cavities make laptops attractive to ants, and it is not so easy to get rid of them.
