A player explains that he has bought a new gaming PC for a lot of money. But the community warns him that the purchase was not a good one. At first glance, a 14-core processor sounds really good, but the age of the hardware is the big problem.
The purchase of a new gaming PC is a big moment. But even here, you can easily make mistakes. A user has recently bought a new PC and wanted to know from the community how good the purchased PC is. The buyer’s problem is particularly that he doesn’t really know what he has bought. He writes:
I bought a refurbished computer and don’t know much about computers – how will it perform?
But it quickly becomes clear: He should not have bought the device.
What hardware is in the computer? According to a reddit post, the following hardware is in the computer for about 800 euros:
- 14-Core Intel Xeon E5-2690V4 CPU
- 64 GB RAM (2x32GB) DDR4 2133 MHz PC4
- Nvidia GeForce RTX 2080 8 GB
Other components like motherboard, case, or storage medium (HDD, SSD) are not mentioned.
What is the problem? The hardware is significantly outdated for the mentioned price of around 800 euros: The Intel processor is 8 years old, and the RTX 2080 is “only” 6 years old.
Additionally, the price is completely inflated:
- For the Intel Xeon E5-2690V4, you pay about 43 euros used on eBay.
- For a compatible motherboard (lga 2011-3), you pay between 80 and 100 euros used.
- For an RTX 2080, you still have to pay around 200 euros.
- For DDR4 RAM, you pay around 50 euros for brand new and get significantly better RAM than what is installed here.
Much more important is the fact that for the money, you can already buy significantly better and, above all, more modern hardware. Many people from the reddit community explain this to the user. For 800 euros, you could buy an expensive PS5 Pro or a real gaming PC.
How did it turn out? The user was very lucky. On reddit, he explains in an update that he was able to cancel the purchase. He also writes that the next time, he wants to take more time before buying a PC again.
Old Hardware is Only Worth It in Rare Cases
Is old hardware even worth it? The problem with very old components is often that they limit themselves: A 10-year-old processor can only be equipped with a similarly old motherboard and DDR3 RAM. Therefore, you will never enjoy modern features. Additionally, older CPUs are often not really energy-efficient.
For modern hardware, you already have to replace the entire system (motherboard, RAM, and CPU). Upgrading old hardware with similarly old hardware is rarely worth it.
