A user replaces their broken dishwasher with a new one. But weeks later, the surprise is great, as some features are hidden behind a paywall. At least the subscription price is reasonable.
The Swiss magazine SRF.ch reports that a user’s dishwasher broke down. The landlord replaced it with a new model.
However, a few weeks after installation, there was a big surprise, as some functions are hidden behind a paywall. So you have to pay extra money to be able to use these functions.
Such subscription models are already not very popular in games, but with a dishwasher, such a subscription causes a lot of confusion. Also, Logitech’s idea to offer a mouse on subscription met with rejection. However, Logitech has distanced itself from this idea in the meantime.
13 euros a year for dishwasher features
What does the subscription cost? The tenant told the SRF that he was supposed to pay 12 francs a year for the subscription if he wanted to use certain features. That is about 13 euros. He explained this to the SRF:
We saw that new functions are available. However, these are behind a paywall. We would have to pay 12 francs per year for that.
The manufacturer V-Zug, a Swiss company based in the city of Zug, stated in a request from the magazine that all new kitchen appliances from V-Zug are equipped with the new subscription model. Users can flexibly expand the functionality of their appliances with additional programs.
The costs are calculated on a monthly basis for the individual programs, but the prices could still change, V-Zug explained.
What do you pay extra for? Especially special programs such as “Intensive Plus” or a special cleaning program for beer glasses could be added through the monthly subscription. The company also stated that the new subscription model is very popular among customers. However, no specific numbers are provided.
Car manufacturers are also relying on subscription models in cars
Who else offers such a subscription? This is reminiscent of the company BMW, which also introduced a subscription for its cars. Functions such as “Driving Assistant Plus,” seat heating, or a high beam assistant are hidden behind a subscription. At BMW, the subscription costs a hefty 17 euros per month, significantly more than for the dishwasher manufacturer.
In countries like Great Britain, Germany, New Zealand, or South Africa, you can sign up for a subscription for your BMW. The features are blocked behind a software lock and are unlocked with the subscription.
