The Deviljho comes with a “Special Assignment” to Monster Hunter World. Learn here how to unlock the Deviljho and access the new quest. Additionally, there are some tips regarding its weaknesses and what you should note during the fight.
The Deviljho has been in Monster Hunter World since March 22 and is a brutal fighting wyvern feared by the inhabitants of the new world. It is also known as the World Eater, as it constantly suffers from hunger and is said to have wiped out entire species due to its gluttony.
To unlock the Deviljho, you need to fulfill certain requirements and go on a quest for clues. Here you will learn step by step what you need to do to access the “Special Assignment” for the beast.
In order to receive the quest for the Deviljho, you must have already made certain progress in the game.
These are the requirements you must fulfill for the Deviljho quest:
- You must be Hunter Rank 13 or higher – Here you can learn how to increase your Hunter Rank
- The investigation “??? Rathian” of the main story must be completed
- Have downloaded Update 2.00 (PS4) / 2.0.0.0 (Xbox One)
Unlocking Deviljho: Embark on Expedition with Question Marks
Once you have fulfilled the basic requirements, it is best to start an expedition in high rank and look for question marks.
When you open the world map, check which area has question marks among the listed monsters. Here, the Deviljho will first appear. For me, this was the case in the Coral Highlands. The Deviljho can appear on any map.
Warning: If you cannot see any question marks, even though you meet the requirements, you simply need to start a few other missions. Repeat this until the question marks appear on the map.
Now embark on a free expedition to the area with the question marks and search for the Deviljho.
Once you have seen the Deviljho for the first time, the Field Expert will scream and tell you that you need to go back to Astera immediately to report your discovery to the Research Commission. You can now decide to fight the Deviljho directly or abort the mission and return to Astera.
Unlock Special Assignment: Talk to “Cheerful Scholar” with the Blue Exclamation Mark
Once you are back in Astera, go to the quest board in the trade shop. Here you will find the three scholars, with a blue exclamation mark above the “Cheerful Scholar”‘s head. Talk to him and you will receive a new investigation.
Look for Deviljho Tracks and Gather Enough Research Points
In every high-rank location as well as in optional quests with 6 or 7 stars, you can now find Deviljho tracks and the beast itself. The Deviljho can also appear in quests where it is not listed.
Once you have gathered enough research points for the Deviljho, talk again to the Cheerful Scholar and he will give you a special assignment: “The Lord of the Food Chain”.
Special assignments are a new type of quest that can be assigned to you and have nothing to do with Elder’s Crossing. These quests are always marked with a blue exclamation mark above an NPC’s head.
Special Assignment: “The Lord of the Food Chain”
Once you have gathered enough research points and have spoken again with the “Cheerful Scholar”, you can now start the Deviljho quest: “The Lord of the Food Chain”. You will find it under the special assignments.
These are the conditions for the Deviljho quest:
- Name: The Lord of the Food Chain
- Location: Ancient Forest
- Difficulty: Star Level 7
- Type: Hunt Quest
- Objective: Hunt a Deviljho
- Time Limit: 50 minutes
- Requirements: HR 13 or higher
- Failure Conditions: Time expired or fainted 3 times
Save the Field Expert!
When you start the quest, it will unfold a little differently than usual. The Field Expert is suddenly missing, and you need to save her from the Deviljho. You are now simultaneously looking for clues of the Field Expert and the Deviljho in the Ancient Forest.
When you find your friend, she is gathering mushrooms and is surprised by the beast. She jumps on the monster’s back, and you must take it down to save the Field Expert.

Defeating the Deviljho in Battle – Quick Tips
The Deviljho has a similar attack pattern to the Anjanath, but is significantly faster in movement and executes its attacks longer. While the Anjanath bites through the ground about 2-3 times, the Deviljho performs this attack 3-5 times.
Here are some quick tips:
- Weapons with Thunder or Dragon Element: The Deviljho is weak against the elements Thunder and Dragon. You can quickly farm Thunder weapons from the Tobi-Kadachi.
- Armor against Dragon Element: The Deviljho possesses the Dragon element and can unleash a dangerous breath in rage mode, dealing Dragon damage. It is therefore advantageous to bring armor that is effective against the Dragon element.
- Positioning, preferably beneath the abdomen: The Deviljho performs dangerous attacks with its mouth and massive tail. It can also make 180-degree turns with its tail, from which you are not safe even at the side of the beast. However, you are safest under the Deviljho. Here, the large monster has difficulty hitting you.
- Nullberries against Dragon Blight: In rage mode, the Deviljho emits a dangerous mist from its mouth. This causes Dragon Blight, which you can heal with Nullberries.
- 20 Dragon Resistance against Dragon Blight: If you have armor that has 20 Dragon Resistance or more, you are protected against the Dragon Blight from the Deviljho. Alternatively, 3 x Resistor Jewels also work.
- Diamond Seeds against Corrosive Saliva: When the Deviljho is exhausted, it starts to drool. The saliva is corrosive and lowers your defense. You can consume Diamond Seeds to counter this.
- Attack the abdomen: The Deviljho’s greatest weakness is its abdomen. This is particularly vulnerable in rage mode.
- Recognizing Rage Mode: Recognizing the rage mode of the Deviljho is easy: its muscles swell and it glows a fiery red.
- Still go to the Canteen in Astera: Keep in mind that the Field Expert is missing. Thus, she cannot prepare meals in camp. You should visit the canteen in Astera before setting out on the quest.
