American Kai Cenat announced on September 20 that he would stop streaming to pursue a career as a professional basketball player. However, things did not go as planned for the approximately 1.70 m tall Twitch star. Cenat is already back on Twitch.
This was Kai Cenat’s announcement: We reported on MeinMMO on September 24:
- Kai Cenat, number 1 on Twitch for the last 365 days, announced his temporary career ending after a marathon stream of Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice
- He said he is no longer a streamer, but will become a professional basketball player. A draft is happening in a few days, in which he will participate. This is not a joke, even if everyone is laughing now
- Many fans considered this a PR stunt, as Kai Cenat, at 22 years old, is too old and at 1.70 m too short to seriously become a professional basketball player.
Kai Cenat and IShowSpeed are the rising stars on YouTube and Twitch in recent years. IShowSpeed is notably more controversial:
Kai Cenat participates in draft for youth basketball league
This was the resolution: In fact, Kai Cenat told the truth: He really did participate in a draft, for a youth basketball league. However, it did not go as well as he had planned.
In a draft, teams select the best player from a pool of players, then the next team takes the second best, and so on. It works similarly to school sports or on the playground when team captains choose their teams.
Kai Cenat participated in the draft of the LBA, the “Little Ballers Association”, a youth basketball league. However, Cenat was chosen last in the league.
There is a wonderful image of him looking rather dejected standing between children and not looking as if he is having fun, even though he announces that he will take care of these kids.
His own mother is chosen before Kai Cenat in the league
How did he embarrass himself? Kai Cenat, being a star, assumed in an interview (via X) that he would “undoubtedly be chosen third” in the draft. However, the number 1 pick was the 10-year-old point guard Rashad Lee.
Even his own mom, “Mama Cenat”, got a much better spot in the draft with pick 15 than her son Kai Cenat, which he commented on with a sorrowful expression.
In the end, for 22-year-old Kai Cenat, only the last place in the draft resulted. He was number 25 and celebrated his selection exuberantly with a “Fuck You” to the crowd.
How did he play then? It was also a mixed bag. In his “professional debut”, he was blocked by a child and then affectionately nibbled on the back of his head (via twitter).
Withdrawal from streaming turns out to be a successful PR stunt
This is what it’s all about: This can all be taken lightly, as it apparently was a PR stunt to promote the “Little Ballers Association”. Cenat, as a popular young man, is evidently an ideal figurehead and played along for the fun.
He presumably played a young star with a huge ego who is publicly humiliated. Meanwhile, he is already streaming on Twitch again. It takes a stable standing and self-image to engage in such a project and to allow oneself to be presented in front of a large audience: The number 1 on Twitch plays a game for 46 hours and then states that he is quitting streaming
