The Twitch streamer Karen Liao was apparently dissatisfied with the amount a viewer donated to her. She threatened to ban him if he didn’t dig deeper into his pockets.
Who is it about? Karen Liao is an influencer who is active on various social media platforms. She runs a TikTok account with 435,500 followers. On Twitch, she is still quite new: about 4,000 people follow her there. To increase the number of her subscribers, she uses unusual methods.
A real game changer for many streamers was Prime Gaming. What it’s all about you can see in the video.
How does Liao want to achieve her sub goal? It is not unusual for streamers on Twitch to ask for subs, or subscriptions to their channels. But Liao is practically extorting her viewers. In one stream, she received a $1 donation from a viewer, after which she confronted him.
“Did you just send me a dollar? What am I supposed to buy with that?” asked the streamer. After all, she only receives 60 cents from it. Karen thought: The viewer shouldn’t be so poor.
Liao urged the viewer to subscribe to her channel – and threatened to ban him if he did not comply with her demand: “Okay, if you don’t sub immediately, you will be banned in 3, 2, 1.”
The clip quickly spread on Twitter and reddit. While some users are shocked by the behavior of the streamer, others believe that Liao’s viewers actually want this kind of content. They already sense a new meta that could take Twitch by storm (via reddit).
Streamer complains, clip was taken out of context
What did Liao have to say? The streamer has now commented on the situation and said that the viewer was banned for a completely different reason. She criticized that the footage was taken out of context.
Why the viewer should have been banned: Liao explained that the viewer had behaved toxic in her chat and insulted other viewers. At the same time, he boasted about wanting to donate a lot of money. So she asked him to back up his words with actions – or to leave.
You can watch Liao’s explanation here in English:
Liao is not the first female streamer to ask her viewers for money in clear terms. The Canadian streamer InvaderVie also got into trouble when she demanded her viewers to gift her a subscription. She also did not accept unemployment and poverty as excuses, as everyone presumably has the money available.
