For many Guardians, the duel between Destiny 1 and Destiny 2 favors the original. However, the well-known expert Datto has a different view and explains to us that we might not remember it correctly.
This is the statement in question: In the Destiny community, Datto is considered an absolute expert, but now he is polarizing with his opinion. According to him, Destiny 2 is better than its predecessor Destiny 1.
This puts him against the current trend – usually, the hierarchy of the two MMO shooters looks exactly the opposite. Datto made this controversial statement during a Q&A session (via YouTube). MeinMMO explains the reasons the streamer had for this.
Who is Datto? Stefan “Datto” Jonke has been following Destiny since its beginnings in 2014 and is known in the community as the nerd next door who explains complex mechanics and makes raids understandable for everyone.
On YouTube, he has over a million subscribers (via YouTube) and was the third largest Twitch streamer for Destiny 2 last year (via Sullygnome). His word carries weight among Destiny players. But Bungie also trusts Datto and lets him conduct important interviews. There were even rumors about a job offer as Bungie’s savior.
“People romanticize Destiny 1”
This is how the expert justifies it: Datto prefers Destiny 2 over the original. Players “glorify the prime-time experience of Destiny 1.” By that, he means the times when:
- the first raid, the Glass Vault, caused a stir
- when the Trials of Osiris brought fresh air into PvP and became a phenomenon
- Destiny 1 was completely turned upside down by the Taken King
According to Datto, such people do not realize the massive content droughts that gaped between these highlights. The serious issues from back then are simply ignored, nostalgically glorified – true to the motto: Everything was better back then!
By the way, the Glass Vault is coming to Destiny 2 soon:
Destiny 1 also scores bonus points because there was no comparable experience before. The peak of the exploration drive has thus ingrained itself in our memory and has dulled us towards Destiny 2.
He admits that Destiny 2 had a rough start and is still far from perfection, but is objectively the rounder and better game.
Do you agree with Datto rationally or does the expert err here greatly? Do we really only remember the good moments from Destiny 1 and block out the rest?
