The streamer Emily “ExtraEmily” Zhang (27) is going through a tough time after an incident on Twitch and is considering quitting streaming to start something else in her life. Even her mother has advised her to go back to work and complete her degree in business. But she can’t imagine pursuing any other career path than streaming. Any suggestion of working a regular job sounds terrible to her.
This is the situation: The streamer ExtraEmily has been under criticism for several days after it allegedly slipped out a bad word during a Twitch stream, and someone recorded the incident and shared it as a clip on social media.
She is accused of having called a black streamer the “N-word” on the phone.
The streamer insists on her innocence, stating that at the moment, she confused the streamer on the phone with her friend “Nick,” called him by the wrong name, and added the sound “Uh” as an expression of shock. So she said “Nick uh” and not the N-word.
But the incident has gone viral, with over 30 million people having seen the clip and heard the words. Since then, ExtraEmily has been preoccupied with those few seconds,
Many streamers can probably hardly imagine returning to normal life after getting used to the influencer lifestyle:
Mom advises her to finish her degree and get a job
This is what ExtraEmily says: In a clip showing ExtraEmily in her car, the visibly upset streamer says: (via Instagram)
What could I do if I’m not a streamer anymore? I talked to my mom and she says: Emily, finish your degree, go to work, and I was like: That sounds terrible!
Every time I think about what I could do, I end up back at streaming. I just have to get through this rough patch, this mean side of the internet.
The streamer wipes tears from her eyes as she says this. She looks affected.
ExtraEmily adds that there is nothing she can do right now, she just has to endure the backlash. These are tough times, and she thought: “Is this maybe a sign to stop and do something else in my life?” These things happen to her more often. It just feels strange.
Streamer receives death threats
Who supports her? Her boyfriend Nick, the streamer Nmplol, whose name she mistakenly used, explains in a clip on X: ExtraEmily really did not slip the N-word. She often says “Uh” – looking at the hate that ExtraEmily is receiving is unbearable. People are sending her death threats.
We have already reported on the incident itself and the massive waves it caused in an article on MeinMMO. You can read more about the situation here: ExtraEmily feels the wrath of the internet for misnaming a friend on Twitch
