In Path of Exile 2 is crafting since update 0.3 an important part of the progression to reach the desired item that you need for your build. A streamer also wanted to improve his God Roll, but accidentally destroyed it irreparably.
What happened to the streamer? The Twitch streamer Raxxanterax, known for his distinctive blue hoodie, is famous for his videos and streams about the ARPGs of Path of Exile and Diablo. With the release of The Third Edict, the expert also ventured into Path of Exile 2, this time in SSF mode (No trade or multiplayer allowed – you are on your own).
By chance, he managed to find a focus for his witch that had 2 prefixes and 3 suffixes with tier 1. This item also had the effect that his skills related to minions gained +2 levels – so a real gem.
Now Raxxanterax wanted to remove the unwanted tier 2 prefix with the Omen of Carving and replace it with a new one. The Omen removes the modifier with the lowest level with the next chaos orb – thus the unwanted prefix. However, when using the chaos orb, the suffix of the minions was removed instead of the prefix, even though it was tier 1.
A mistake that could have been avoided
What went wrong? Raxxanterax and his Twitch chat were astonished and wanted to find out where the mistake lay. They scoured the internet and then found out that they had misjudged the Omen.
The Omen of Carving, as its effect states, removes the modifier with the lowest level with the next chaos orb. Consequently, you would think of the tier levels, which are all visible in the game, but those are not meant.
Each prefix and suffix has an invisible level called iLevel, in addition to its tiers. This level indicates at what level the respective effect can appear in the mentioned tiers. The mana effect on tier 2 that Raxxanterax wanted to get rid of had an iLevel of 65, while his other effects were over 75, except for the effect of the minions – this was also at an iLevel of 65.
In the attempt to banish the mana effect from his focus, there was a 50% chance that it would also hit the suffix of the minions, which consequently happened.
How could the mistake have been avoided? Through third-party sites like PoE2Wiki and PoE2DB, one can learn how the respective items actually work, and Raxxanterax also learned about the actual function of the Omen.
The Twitch streamer asked his audience and the developers from GGG whether it was intended that one has to rely on external sites to find out. For him, the system was not optimal and since he is in SSF, there is also no chance to replace his item.
In general, it can be said: Before trying anything in crafting, make absolutely sure of what you are about to do – even more so in SSF, because if you mess up something once, there’s no going back.
