The online shooter Fortnite held a major world championship in the summer of 2019: it was won by then 16-year-old Kyle “Bugha” Giersdorf: He earned 3 million US dollars for the title. He is now 20 years old, streams on Twitch, and has trouble with his mom.
Who is Bugha?
- Bugha came into the public eye in 2019 when he prevailed against 99 other top players at the Fortnite World Championship and won the World Championship title. Before that, hardly anyone knew the now 20-year-old American. He won the title because he found the perfect middle ground: Bugha aggressively eliminated players while also staying out of risky situations.
- Unlike the wilder and rougher guys who usually dominate Twitch, like Tfue or Clix, Bugha is a calm, reserved guy. Epic Games created a homestory about him in 2019, and it seemed like Bugha grew up in the perfect American family .
- But once his mother did scold the golden child for behavior in Fortnite.

This is the scene: A short clip is circulating on Twitter. Apparently, Bugha had just gotten upset in the Twitch stream before the clip starts and used some bad words.
His mother Darcy seems to have heard this and is wondering where the boy learned such bad words. She reproaches him: “Have I ever said anything like that in front of you?”
But Bugha’s answer comes out like a shotgun: “Yeah, okay. But have you ever been stuck in the low ground while 3 kids were spraying you from the high ground?”
The answer hits the nail on the head:
That is indeed dry.
The tweet with the text “I still can’t believe that Bugha talks to his mother like that” has now reached 1.6 million views.
The clip is already older and resurfaced in July 2023, where it immediately went viral. The earliest mentions of Bugha’s scene date back to early 2022.
Why is the tweet so popular? It is an everyday situation that many can identify with: The mother hears her son speaking this way in gaming and scolds him for it. He couldn’t have learned that from her. She always keeps it together in front of him.
The situation seems so absurd because it’s not just anyone being scolded, but a multimillionaire and world champion – and he responds respectfully, but totally within his own context, pointing out his particularly tricky situation, which must be extreme enough for him to occasionally lose his temper.
The mother might keep it together, but she surely never faced 3 kids spraying her from the high ground.
