What is Total War: Warhammer 40,000? This is a new game in the Total War series, developed by Creative Assembly. It combines large real-time battles with global strategy. The setting is the universe of Warhammer 40,000, created by Games Workshop, where humanity of the 41st millennium fights against heretics, mutants, and aliens.
When will the game be released? Developer Creative Assembly has not yet announced a release date. They plan to discuss this in 2026, according to the official website (www.totalwar.com).
For which platforms will the game be released? Total War: Warhammer 40,000 will be available for PC as well as for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. There is already a shop page for the game on Steam, where you can add it to your wishlist. When can I pre-order Total War: Warhammer 40,000? Currently, there is no way to pre-order the game. It is also not known when this will be possible.
What editions are available? It is still unknown whether there will be different editions available at release. There is no pre-order DLC, and the developers will discuss other bonuses for pre-orders only in 2026.
What is Total War: Warhammer 40,000 about?
The strategy game aims to provide a sandbox experience on a galactic scale. Round by round, you conquer planets and expand your empire. However, you also need to keep an eye on your war economy, as it must be able to support your armies.
Before you set foot on a planet to conquer it, you can bombard enemies from orbit. You may even completely destroy planets if you cannot wrest them from your enemies.
On the battlefield, each faction brings its own units, ranging from cannon fodder to elite units and massive war machines. New is also the dynamic destruction on the battlefield, which is meant to change the terrain and create new cover or tactical opportunities.
Four playable factions at launch
At launch, Total War: Warhammer 40,000 will only offer four playable factions:
- Space Marines: Genetically enhanced super-soldiers of the Imperium of Man, making up for their small numbers with superhuman combat power.
- Orks: The greenskins live for war and ambush enemies with their seemingly endless numbers of warriors.
- Aeldari (or Eldar): An ancient species of aliens that once ruled the stars – now they fight against extinction. In battle, they strike quickly, precisely, and stealthily.
- Astra Militarum: The foot soldiers of the Imperium, a bulwark of flesh and steel. They march in large numbers and are supported by powerful tanks and artillery.
More factions like the Chaos Space Marines are likely to be provided as DLCs later. In true Warhammer fashion, you will also be able to customize your units and vehicles, a relic from the tabletop template. You can give them your own paint job and decorative details.
