Destiny 2 begins a new saga with the expansion “The Edge of Destiny”. We will show you what the update has in store.
What is this new expansion? On July 15, 2025, the new expansion “The Edge of Destiny” was released in Destiny 2, marking the start of a new saga of the loot shooter by Bungie. The so-called “Fate Saga” will explore whether the Guardians are bound by fate.
What is the new expansion about? Within the campaign of “The Edge of Destiny”, the Guardians are invited by the Nine – mysterious beings older than the Traveler itself – to the planet Kepler.
Kepler is characterized by an extraordinary amount of dark matter that grants the Guardians new abilities. However, it soon becomes clear that the planet is held together by a black hole that threatens the entire solar system if it collapses.
Introduction of Set Bonuses, Weapon Tiers, and “the Portal”
Here are the highlights of the expansion: With the expansion “The Edge of Destiny”, several new contents as well as changes to existing systems are being introduced. We present you an overview of the most exciting innovations of the update:
- a new story campaign on Kepler, which marks the beginning of the Destiny Saga
- a new raid called “The Desert Perpetual”, playable from July 17
- Introduction of “the Portal”, a new hub for launching missions
- Overhaul of stats
- Changes to loot and introduction of weapon tiers
- Overhaul of the armor system with Armor 3.0, including the introduction of set bonuses, new stat, and gear tiers
- Rework of the melee system
- New exotics
- a new shooting range in the Tower
Additionally, there will be some minor changes to the various vendors. For example, Ada-1 will now sell legendary armor pieces that you could previously obtain from Xûr. Xûr will now offer 2 exotic armor pieces per class, per week.
The Portal is a hub to customize missions
What is the Portal? The Portal is a new hub that offers a variety of different activities that can be customized with various modifiers – for example, to increase difficulty and grab bonus rewards. You can also personalize your gameplay experience when going through the activities.
The activities of the Portal are divided into different categories. There are:
Solo Operations:
- Solo Operations are activities designed to be completed by 1-3 players and require minimal time investment.
Strike Team Operations:
- These are activities for three players, designed either with matchmaking or for prepared groups. Strike Team Operations require more cooperation than Solo Ops and include activities such as strikes and incursions.
Flashpoint Operations:
- Flashpoint Operations are designed for six players and either have matchmaking or require prepared groups. However, Flashpoint Operations are only planned for a future season.
Top Operations:
- These are activities for three players with more challenging content, including dungeons, exotic missions, and full-length incursions. Top Operations feature an exclusive reward pool, but success is not guaranteed.
Crucible:
- A selection of core Crucible playlists for solo players and strike teams with an exclusive reward pool.
Weapon tiers are meant to make your loot more interesting
What are weapon tiers? In “The Edge of Destiny”, weapon tiers are introduced, which add a new component to your loot.
Each weapon will have a specific tier from the start. There are a total of 5 tiers. When you find a weapon with a higher tier, it will have a mechanical advantage:
- Tier 1: Base weapon, can use new seasonal mods once obtained.
- Tier 2: Enhanced traits.
- Tier 3: Appears with two traits per column.
- Tier 4: Enhanced weapon mods (including seasonal); Enhanced weapon components (such as barrels and magazines).
- Tier 5: Enhanced origin traits; three traits per column; access to a unique ornament (with unique shader) and a unique combat flair.
You will receive tier 1 weapons at the very beginning of the campaign, before occasionally finding tier 2 loot throughout the story. Once you have completed the campaign of the expansion, you can unlock higher tiers at higher difficulty levels.

Major overhaul of armor and its stats with Armor 3.0
What changes with Armor 3.0? Armor 3.0 brings several fundamental changes to the armor system in Destiny 2:
- Set Bonuses
- Set bonuses are perks that you earn when you equip armor pieces from the same set – the first bonus is granted for 2 pieces from the same set, the second for 4 pieces. You can also combine two sets and use the first perk for both.
- Archetypes
- Each armor will now have one of six archetypes, each corresponding to a certain playstyle and determining the two highest stats of that armor.
- The 6 archetypes:
- Paragon: Super primary, melee secondary
- Grenadier: Grenade primary, super secondary
- Specialist: Class primary, weapons secondary
- Brawler: Melee primary, health secondary
- Bulwark: Health primary, class secondary
- Gunner: Weapons primary, grenade secondary
- Masterworking
- All armor will now have its maximum armor energy available regardless of the masterwork level, and mastering armor no longer increases all stats.
- Gear Tiers
- Similar to weapons, armor pieces now have tiers from 1 to 5. However, the tier affects the total values of the individual pieces of your armor. Tiers 4 and 5 additionally offer extra bonuses.
What changes are there to the stats? The stats of the armors have been revised and renamed:
- Mobility is now Weapons
- Resilience is now Health
- Recovery is now Class
- Strength is now Melee
- Discipline is now Grenade
- Intellect is now Super
Additionally, how your stat investment affects you has changed. At 0-30, your abilities charge slower than before, while at 70-100, they charge faster.
How does melee change? Currently, melee damage is multiplied in Destiny 2, but with the new expansion, the various damage sources will be added. Moreover, almost all effects that increase melee damage will now be amplified. Some will even deal double damage.
Here are the new exotics: With “The Edge of Destiny”, a total of 6 new exotics will be released:
- Melas Panoplia (Titan Gloves)
- Exotic perk: Collecting a Firesprite or a quick Solar finish makes you a Forge Master, allowing you to recall your Throwing Hammer. After the Hammer hits a target, you can recall it with full intensity to execute a perfect recall that causes an explosion of Forge Slag. Perfect recalls and collecting Firesprites extend your time as a Forge Master.
- Eunoia (Warlock Gloves)
- Exotic perk: Hellion projectiles deal increased damage the farther they fly and ultimately shatter into searing shrapnel.
- Moirai (Hunter Chest Armor)
- Exotic perk: The Threaded Spike can bounce to Fabric Balls, detonate them, and return immediately. Fabric Balls detonated by the Threaded Spike will be rewoven and collected by it. Successful catches without a Fabric Ball grant additional melee energy.
- Graviton Spike (Hand Cannon)
- Temporal Manipulation IV Intrinsic Perk: You can switch between fast-firing Arc mode and slow-firing Stasis mode. Finishing moves and precision hits overload the respective other mode for additional effects.
- Temporal Anomaly – Trait: While overloaded, each mode spends some of the overload for additional effects on finishers or precision hits:
- Arc mode calls down lightning strikes.
- Stasis mode creates an explosion and a formation of stasis crystals.
- Third Iteration (Scout Rifle)
- Tri-Planar Mass Driver – Intrinsic Perk: Fires a spread of Void energy projectiles. Aiming down sights reduces spread.
- Amalgamations Bullets: Briefly aiming down sights without firing compresses the spread into a single high-density projectile. Hitting a target with this shot marks it and deals additional damage to marked targets. Defeating a marked target or achieving a precision finisher with an Amalgamation Bullet grants invisibility and Truesight.
- New Land Beyond (Sniper Rifle)
- The Master: Precision hits increase the damage of this weapon until the wielder is defeated. Significantly increases ammo reserves.
- Bullseye Bolster: A precision hit significantly increases target acquisition, handling, reload speed, and stability of this weapon for a brief period.
