Anyone who wants to win in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate needs a strong fighter. The experts of the game have already created a tier list based on their experience in the game, showing the best characters.
We present a selection of tier lists from professionals and also show you the best fighters in several categories.
This article was updated on January 12, 2019, and shows the current tier lists of esports professionals.
Leffen’s Tier List: These are his best fighters in Super Smash Bros.
Who created the tier list? The tier list we are showing you is by William Hjelte. Under the name “Leffen,” he has won numerous awards in the predecessor games of Super Smash Bros. He is considered one of the best Smash players.
What do the rankings mean? In a tier list, characters are ranked into different levels. The S-tier is the highest level, while E-tier is the lowest.
Leffen ranked the characters into six tiers. They are as follows:
- S-Tier: Mewtwo, Chrom, Roy, Peach, Daisy, Pokemon Trainer, Richter, Simon, Pikachu, Corrin, Pichu, Yoshi, Falco
- A-Tier: Shulk, Marth, Lucina, Donkey Kong, Diddy Kong, Meta Knight, Wolf, Sonic, R.O.B.
- B-Tier: Fox, Fuegro, Palutena, Bowser, King K. Rool, Ike, Young Link, Zero Suit Samus
- C-Tier: Quajutsu, Ridley, King Dedede, Olimar, Mii Gunner, Jigglypuff, Mii Brawler, Ryu, Luigi, Wario, Toon Link, Ken, Sheik, Cloud
- D-Tier: Mario, Dr. Mario, Ness, Mii Swordfighter, Duck Hunt, Robin, Lucas, Mr. Game & Watch, Rosalina & Luma, Dark Pit, Pit, Bayonetta, Captain Falcon
- E-Tier: Pac-Man, Snake, Ice Climbers, Zelda, Ganondorf, Bowser Jr., Villager, Melinda, Mega Man, Kirby, Dark Samus, Samus, Little Mac, Link, Wii Fit Trainer
How were the characters evaluated? Leffen evaluated the characters based on his initial gameplay experiences. He found it important that the characters had unique features. Those with high speed or strong special attacks were rated higher. In his view, the S-tiers could defeat any character from the other tiers.
Update from December 14: After the update, Leffen adjusted his tier list a bit. He was able to gain more player experiences and assess the characters better. This list is his final tier list for Super Smash for now. He believes that the list will not change quickly.
ZeRo’s Tier List: These are his best fighters in Super Smash Bros.
Who created the tier list? This tier list comes from ZeRo. He is a professional esports player and has won various tournaments in Super Smash Bros. He created this list on December 14.
How were the rankings made? ZeRo ranked the fighters as very good, above average, average, and below average.
- Very Good: Inkling, Chrom, Pikachu, Peach, Daisy, Olimar, Lucina, Marth, Yoshi
- Above Average: Richter, Simon, Lucario, Roy, Link, Young Link, Mewtwo, Palutena, Ike, Cloud, Samus, Dark Samus, Lucas, Pit, Dark Pit, Snake, Shulk, Ryu, Ken, Pichu, Pokemon Trainer, Mega Man, Sonic, Donkey Kong, Bowser, King K. Rool, Ness, Melinda, Villager, Wario, Wolf, Toon Link, Rosalina & Luma, Fox, Wii Fit Trainer, Luigi, Zero Suit Samus, R.O.B., Robin, Corrin, Meta Knight, Dr. Mario, Duck Hunt

How were the characters evaluated? They were evaluated based on his initial experiences in the game. He was able to test the game before other players at events. The first weeks since the release also factor into the evaluation. He evaluates the players based on his own experiences and gameplay feel.
Best fighters in different categories
Nintendo does not provide much information about their fighters. In the “Tips” category, they give a little insight into the stats of their characters. The following stats are known:
- Which fighters jump the highest? Falco, Quajutsu, Zero Suit Samus
- Which fighter can do the most jumps in a row? Jigglypuff (6), Meta Knight (6), Kirby (6)
- Which fighters are the heaviest? Bowser, King K. Rool, Donkey Kong, King Dedede
- Which fighters are the lightest? Pichu, Jigglypuff, Mr. Game & Watch
- Which fighters are the fastest? Sonic, Captain Falcon, Little Mac
What do the stats tell us? These stats are meant to give an initial insight into the characters. If you prefer to play with a fighter that can jump a lot, then you should consider Kirby or Jigglypuff. If you are someone who prefers heavy and bulky fighters, then Bowser or Donkey Kong would be your choice.
In the end, however, trying out is the way to go. Every player has a different play style and prefers different strengths.
