For some time now, there has been increasing work on WoW Classic. Now hints have emerged that a Beta might be released before the launch. A test version even already exists.
What new information is available? In mid-April 2019, a new, larger file was distributed in Blizzard’s Content Distribution Network (CDN). This was labeled “wow_classic_beta/cdns”. (via wccftech)
Shortly after, Community Manager Bornakk clarified in the official Blizzard forum that this found “Beta” is only an Alpha test for developers.
This “Beta” is supposed to test various features, such as logging in via the Battle.net app. Otherwise, there have been no official announcements about the Beta yet.
How likely is a Beta? So far, no decision has been made on whether there will be a Beta for testing Vanilla-WoW. It is also difficult to predict which direction Blizzard will go.
Supporting reasons for a Beta:
- that World of Warcraft itself is developed with the help of a Public Test Realm and various Betas to improve ongoing and new expansions.
- the emergence of the developer test version. It opens up the possibility of later making this available to Beta testers.
Against it:
- that WoW Classic already essentially exists as a finished game.
- It does not need to be completely redeveloped, and much feedback on the updates it receives comes from the community that played it earlier.
If a Beta does come, it should probably be released in the near future, as the release of WoW Classic is planned for summer 2019.
How to participate in the Beta if it comes: Interested parties can register for Betas of World of Warcraft via the Beta settings on their Battle.net account.
In the corresponding support article, which is only available in English, it is noted that currently no public Beta is available. Registration only grants the chance to be invited to the Beta test if a Beta comes.

All of this is reasons for fans to look forward to WoW Classic. The community is already preparing for the launch in various Reddit threads, sharing information and memes or approaching the expected release of Classic with a healthy dose of self-irony.
