To keep the servers in the multiplayer mode for up to 128 players of Battlefield 2042 full, developer DICE is relying on bots. However, they are not just meant to fill the matches, but also bring other practical features into the game. MeinMMO summarizes the role that AI opponents play in the shooter.
What’s new about this? So far, AI opponents were mainly used in the story mode of the Battlefield series. Occasionally, there were modes like the co-op mode from Battlefield 3 – apart from that, bots were not seen in multiplayer.
With Battlefield 2042, however, bots will take on a different and new role. Their main purpose will be to fill the servers in case not enough participants are found for matches with 128 players. There are, however, other places where AI enemies will be deployed, going beyond just a fill-in option.
Where does the information come from? It can be found on the official website for Battlefield 2042 (via answers.ea.com). There are also many other details about the shooter. We will explain how the bots will be utilized.

Bots in Battlefield 2042 ensure full matches, also enabling co-op and solo training
When will bots be used? Regardless of region, the bots will ensure that you always have enough opponents to shoot at in matches. However, there are two other interesting features that the bots will bring into the game:
- Co-op: You can start matches with your friends where you will only encounter AI opponents.
- Solo: Apparently, you can also play alone against other bots.
How will this work? On the official website for Battlefield 2042, there is only limited information available. It mentions co-op and solo matches in the Conquest and Breakthrough modes. Whether this will also be possible for later planned game modes is currently unknown.
It is not entirely clear if, for example, you will face 60 other bots with a team of four against another 64 enemy bots. However, since these modes are mentioned, we can expect full bot teams. It is also unclear how much flexibility you will have in creating such matches and whether the number of bots can be determined.
Regardless, both the solo and co-op modes should provide a good opportunity to improve your skills before diving into multiplayer battles. How clever the opponent AI becomes remains to be seen. It is unlikely they will truly replace real players.
At least you can use this opportunity to hone your flying skills with jets and helicopters at your own pace. Additionally, it might also allow for a more stress-free exploration of the 7 major launch maps of Battlefield 2042.
When will Battlefield 2042 be released? The shooter is scheduled to be released on October 21, 2021. The game will be available for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and Xbox One.
However, the versions for PS4 and Xbox One will differ significantly from the newer console variants. For example, there should be a maximum of 64 players on a map, which is just half. It is thus unclear whether the bots will be used there as well.
