In Delaware, USA, a thief stole a rare Pokémon trading card from someone. After the theft, the perpetrator wanted to sell the card on Facebook; after all, it is worth several tens of thousands of euros. But this was precisely what led the police to catch him.
Which Pokémon trading card is it? The stolen item is presumed to be a holographic Charizard card from the Base Set. This is one of the most valuable cards that the trading card game has to offer, with an approximate value of 36,000 euros.
Trading cards featuring the Pokémon Charizard are among the rarest and most valuable cards ever.
Depending on the condition of such a card, it is rated on a scale from 1 to 10. 1 means the worst condition, which also decreases the price, and 10 means the best condition, and hence the highest price.
You can also collect Pokémon trading cards digitally. The new Pokémon TCG Pocket makes it possible, as you can see in the video:
Thief wants to use Facebook to sell stolen goods
The Charizard card was stolen from a house in East Sussex, Delaware. This must have happened between September 2 and 5, 2024, reported the BBC.
Instead of hiding the card or selling it on the black market, the thief posted an ad on Facebook. Here he attempted to sell the card, but that would be the mistake that led to his arrest, as he had provided his address in the ad.
How did it end? Eventually, the thief was caught through Facebook. The police discovered the ad on Facebook, went to the stated address in Polegate, and was able to secure the card during the search.
The card was subsequently returned to its rightful owner. For the owner, it was not only of high material value but also had emotional significance. The 23-year-old thief received a warning as he confessed to his crime.
Owning valuable Pokémon trading cards can be a real risk. Fortunately, it is also possible to collect the cards digitally: The new Pokémon TCG Pocket brings the nostalgia of Pokémon trading cards directly into your smartphone, as also noted by MeinMMO author Jasmin Beverungen: The new trading card game for Pokémon does almost everything better than the original from the past and doesn’t even cost anything
