The mobile offshoot of Final Fantasy XIV is now live and allows players to immerse themselves in the world of Eorzea on their smartphones and tablets. However, this does not apply to everyone, and the monetization differs significantly from the original.
What version of FF14 is this? Final Fantasy XIV Mobile is, as the name suggests, a mobile variant of the MMORPG. It is not a direct port of the original for mobile devices, but the version has been adapted and simplified in terms of gameplay and controls.
At the beginning, there are 9 classes to choose from for your character. You can also customize your character, selecting race, gender, and appearance. Additionally, there are situational commands and a simplified interface.
Who can play FF14 Mobile already? Since June 19, 2025, Final Fantasy XIV Mobile has been available online – but initially only for China. A global launch is planned, but so far there is no official date or potential timeframe mentioned.
The version shows that you can select up to 16 colors per armor and also what reworks you can expect compared to the original. Additionally, the version provides a first look at the types of monetization that show significant differences from the PC and console version.
Almost like the original, but just almost
How does monetization work? According to a compilation by user RablaAndrews in his thread on Reddit, Final Fantasy XIV Mobile is basically free-to-play. This contrasts with the PC and console version, where a subscription is required once you want to continue playing beyond the free trial.
While FF14 Mobile explicitly avoids common gacha mechanics, there will be, as is common in most initially free mobile games, an in-game shop. There will also be a battle pass and a monthly premium service.
For the items in this shop, you will need special in-game currency, reminiscent of the Crysta from the original version (see square-enix-games.com). In the Chinese version, the shop is already active and available.
The bundles of currency you can purchase range from approximately €1 to about €100. There is a high probability that the prices and items in the European or global version will be very similar. For the currency, you are likely to be able to purchase the following items on an optional basis:
- Premium outfits from the Mog Station
- Standard outfits from the main game
- Mounts
- Companions
- Consumable items, such as Fantasia to customize your character again or name changes, colors, emotes, …
You can gain a first visual impression in the thread on Reddit:
However, the biggest difference from the original is represented by the battle pass and the monthly premium service:
- Battle Pass: A linear reward path where you need to gain experience to receive rewards. There is a free and a paid path. The latter is expected to cost around €10 if you want to start from “zero” and around €30 if you want to skip a few levels of the pass and directly claim the rewards.
If you purchase the paid pass, you will receive rewards from both paths. Additionally, there is expected to be a store where you can spend specific currency from the battle pass. This is supposed to include colors, materials, and other usable items. - Monthly Premium Service: This is expected to cost around €5 and will grant you a chunk of in-game currency as well as additional currency for each daily login plus experience boosts. These will be stored for up to 15 days in case you miss a day.
Additionally, as a subscriber for the whole month, you will receive bonuses, such as more experience, lower fees at the market board, more market board slots, and faster mounts.
Both services are optional, so you can actually play the complete mobile MMO for free if you want. This significantly distinguishes FF14 Mobile from the PC and console version.
Raids will also play a major role in the mobile offshoot of Final Fantasy XIV. In a livestream before the Chinese release, significant changes in gameplay and user interface were already shown. It also showed how the fights, especially for attackers, are made more pleasant: In the latest version of Final Fantasy XIV, old raids are improved, and there is a new button that helps attackers
