The WoW community can actually be quite friendly

The reputation of the players of World of Warcraft is not necessarily the best. But has that changed? Cortyn talks about the last few weeks.

Anyone who plays World of Warcraft has to deal with many other players. These encounters are not always pleasant. Especially in the Group Finder, players often report encountering egotistical or unfriendly teammates who ruin the fun for everyone else.

Sure – the community of World of Warcraft doesn’t have as bad a reputation as, for example, is the case with MOBAs like League of Legends. But a glance into the forums is usually enough to recognize that a part of the WoW community does not show its best side. In other games, such as among a large part of the player base of Final Fantasy, the WoW community is considered arrogant, unfriendly towards beginners, and more or less “to be avoided.”

WoW players do not have the best reputation everywhere. Rightly so?

And in many cases, I would even agree. While there are many social structures, such as guilds, that are very harmonious with each other, there is often a lot of complaining about “outsiders” and a much lower tolerance for mistakes is set. Willingness to help strangers is often less.

Azshara’s Rise has made WoW more social again

Patch 8.2 Azshara’s Rise has, however, ensured that social gameplay is back in the spotlight – at least that is my opinion. Of course, I can only speak for my realm and the players on the respective shard, but the communication and willingness to cooperate in the last few weeks has made me really happy.

This is mainly due to the many rare spawns in Nazjatar and Mechagon. Almost every spawn is announced in the general chat, and when someone says “please wait a moment,” everyone waits. If the mob is already in combat, players will stop dealing damage and actually wait.

Just a few months ago, this would have been hardly imaginable for me in the “Everyone does their own thing” world. I have even seen tanks purposely pull a mob far away so that it resets again, giving the last stragglers a chance.

Another point is the many small secrets. Many enemies have hidden spawn conditions. For example, to summon a carnivorous plant, you must first plant a seed and then feed the plant. To summon a water elemental, you must kill three specific summoners of the Naga for it to appear. Elsewhere, five more or less hidden eggs need to be broken for a rare spawn to show up.

There is a cheerful atmosphere while waiting for a mount

Right now, while I am writing this text, I am standing with around 70 other people in Nazjatar and occasionally looking at the second screen to see if Fabious is swimming by. Players have been sitting here for over six hours, joking around while waiting for the hidden mount. It is a peaceful, amusing, and fun atmosphere. No one is being “difficult” or acting like a complete jerk. The group keeps growing, and although nothing is happening other than “waiting,” most players are having a good time.

After 8 hours, it was worth the wait.

The last few weeks since the release of Patch 8.2 have clearly shown me that the World of Warcraft community has not become nearly as bad as it occasionally appears in the forums. The mechanics of Patch 8.2, with its numerous secrets and actually rare rare spawns, have contributed significantly to making World of Warcraft a more social experience again.

This has done the game really, really good. Currently, playing World of Warcraft is really fun again. And this is not only due to the content but also to the players, who show themselves to be very social and friendly in large parts. For some veterans, this might remind them a bit of the “Classic feeling”.

How are you experiencing World of Warcraft currently? Are you having similar experiences on your realms? Or is it entirely different for you?
