Stranger Things revealed its main antagonist in Season 4, who will also return in the upcoming fifth chapter. The creators of the series had big plans for the character and explain who the inspirations were.
Attention Spoiler: We will reveal details about the antagonist of Stranger Things. If you haven’t watched Season 4 yet and intend to catch up, you should better not continue reading.
Who is the villain from Stranger Things? Vecna first appeared in Season 4 of the series. This is especially unusual because he is the main antagonist and appears relatively late. Prior to his appearance, the Mind Flayer was the major threat, and he was also created by Vecna.
However, he was not always the villain as we experience him. Initially, Vecna was a human named Henry Creel, who possessed telekinetic powers. Driven by an unbridled hatred for humanity, he decided to plunge the world into chaos. However, since he could not yet control his own powers properly, he eventually came to Dr. Brenner, who wanted to study him. This was also where Eleven was located.
Years later, Henry also used Eleven to unleash his full power but was sent by her into an alternate dimension. There, he transformed into the villain as we see him in Stranger Things – and into the enemy that needs to be defeated.
Thanks to his terrifying design – and of course his actions – the creators of the series have succeeded in creating an impressive villain. They had inspirations that belong to the icons of horror cinema.
A nightmare killer and a spiky demon
Who were the inspirations? The brothers Matt and Ross Duffer, who created Stranger Things and are still responsible for the story, spoke in an interview with Variety about their inspirations.
At the latest, when they revealed their main antagonist while writing Season 4, it was clear that he could not seem arbitrary. The brothers wanted to create a “sensitive horror villain in the style of Freddy Krueger or Pinhead”.
These two characters were “the horror villains that scared us the most in our childhood”. Co-writer Kate Trefry brought the Duffer brothers the idea to combine these two characters and create something of their own.
What are the similarities? The mentioned inspirations are not surprising when you look more closely at Vecna. Like Freddy Krueger, who visits and kills his victims in nightmares, Vecna also haunts them in their heads. His face also resembles Krueger’s, who looks similarly burned and disfigured.
A fitting reference to Freddy Krueger comes from actor Robert Englund, who portrayed the character in the first Nightmare on Elm Street. He appears in a scene from Season 4 as a patient in an institution. Shortly thereafter, the character Dustin even makes a direct comparison between Vecna and Freddy Krueger.
Pinhead from the Hellraiser series also shares some aspects with Vecna: Both operate on supernatural levels and are sadistic and extremely brutal in their own way. They exude pure danger and their appearance alone would cause most of us to flee, even if it would be hopeless …
Moreover, the Duffer brothers revealed to USA Today that while filming each scene with Vecna, they played the soundtrack of Hellraiser. You can hear how the atmosphere automatically becomes threatening on YouTube yourself.
Vecna will appear again in Season 5 of Stranger Things. But this time for the last time, as the series culminates in its grand finale. The wait for that will soon be over, as the first episodes will be released on November 26, 2025.
