Splitgate 2 was promoted at the Summer Game Fest 2025 as the shooter that wanted to save its genre, but now the game is trying drastic measures to save itself. It is even going back to beta.
What did I miss about Splitgate 2? At the Summer Game Fest 2025, the CEO of Studio 1047 Games, Ian Proulx, took the stage and gave a compelling speech about the decline of the shooter genre. It needs change to make FPS great again. This change was presented by the CEO, as Splitgate 2 was announced right after.
The game is supposed to have not only its well-known area mode with portals but also a battle royale, as well as battle passes and skins for sale. A bitter disappointment for many shooter fans. Splitgate 2 advertised itself as the salvation of the genre, but now, 7 weeks after its release, the game has lost 90% of its players on Steam (Source: steamcharts.com).
With an open letter, the studio has now spoken out to discuss future plans and save its game.

What have the developers announced? In an open letter on Steam (Source: store.steampowered.com), Studio 1047 Games addressed the current state of Splitgate 2. The team admits that they released the game too early. For this reason, it’s going back to beta. During the beta phase, key points that fans have criticized will be adjusted, including:
- Revise the progression system
- Implement more portals in maps
- Simplify monetization
- Focus more on classic modes
Additionally, more focus should be placed on the community, and development should return to its roots, as was the case with Splitgate 1. There should be more surveys and playtests. The goal is to combine the DNA of the first installment with the improvements from part 2.
Since the loss of the player base has also caused financial problems, the studio had to take measures to continue developing Splitgate 2. Therefore, some positions in the team were eliminated. It was also announced that the OG Splitgate servers will be shut down in a month.
What happens next? Splitgate 2 is still supposed to remain playable. Additionally, Chapter 3 is planned to be released. Bug fixes and significant changes are also still to be made, but afterwards, the priority will be on the development of the shooter.
According to the studio, the beta phase is expected to last until spring 2026, but that is not set in stone yet.
