Where does the information come from? The online magazine Angstronomics took a closer look at the motherboard of the new PS5 and compared the two chips of the consoles. They made a few interesting discoveries in the process.
What exactly is changing? The combined processor used in the PS5 will be smaller. So far, AMD and Sony have relied on a chip that combines the processor and graphics chip. This chip is currently manufactured with 7 nm. The latest chip, which is said to be called “Oberon Plus”, is only 6 nm in size.
The reduction (so-called “Die Shrink”) initially sounds like very little, but the size has decreased from around 300 mm² to under 260 mm². That’s 15% less.
What does this bring? A smaller chip means lower costs for the manufacturer. Because Sony and AMD need fewer resources to produce the chips this way. This also means that AMD and Sony can produce more chips for the PS5 from a single wafer. A wafer is a silicon disc on which the microchips are produced.
Additionally, a smaller chip requires less cooling. Here, too, costs can be saved, and the power consumption of the processor and cooling also decreases. The reduced power consumption has already been established: The current revised model CFI-1200 consumes about 20 watts less during gaming.
When will the model arrive for us? We do not yet know when the new version of the PS5 will arrive in Germany. However, it is quite likely that the optimized model will eventually come to Germany.
