Sony has revealed details about the new Pro Controller for the PlayStation 5 – features, release date, price, and packaging are now known. MeinMMO shows you the new information and gives an initial assessment of the new premium controller for the PS5.
When will the DualSense Edge be released and what will it cost? The most important things first – here are the prices and the release date:
- PS5 DualSense Edge
- Price: 240 euros
- Release: January 26, 2023
- Pre-order: October 25, 2022
Sony is thus releasing its own Pro Controller for its consoles for the first time. The DualSense Edge comes with adjustable triggers, back buttons, and many customizable control features.
However, the price might be a bit steep for many players – for 240 euros, you could already finance half of a PlayStation 5.
What features are included in the device and an initial impression of price and controller can be found here on MeinMMO. We will include the trailer for the DualSense Edge here:
Pro Controller PS5: DualSense Edge – Features & Packaging
What features does the DualSense Edge have? The new Pro Controller does not skimp on extras and comes with many functions that the regular DualSense does not have:
- Replaceable sticks and stick modules
- You can remove the complete sticks including the base. Together with the controller, you will also receive some new sticks with different grips.
- Paddles on the back
- At the back of the controller, there are extra buttons called paddles. You can assign buttons to them and also replace them – you will also find some replacement paddles included.
- Trigger distance adjustment
- You have a switch under your back triggers (R2, L2). This allows you to shorten the distance needed to activate the trigger.
- Controller profiles
- The DualSense Edge has internal storage for multiple controller profiles. At the press of a button, you can remap the buttons, adjust the stick sensitivity, or realign the stick dead zones.
- FN buttons
- Under the sticks, you have two more buttons that allow you to make adjustments on the PS5 and the controller. Here you can change the volume or quickly switch controller profiles.
Additionally, the usual features of a normal DualSense controller are present: adaptive triggers, haptic feedback, microphone, and speaker in the controller. No feature has been removed – everything is as it is with the DualSense, but with the mentioned extras.
What does the packaging include? The packaging is quite extensive. In addition to the interchangeable gadgets, there is also a controller bag included:
- DualSense Edge
- High-quality braided USB cable
- Housing for the plug, which can be attached to the controller
- 4 replacement sticks with 2 different profiles
- 4 back paddles, one pair each (lever and semicircular)
- Protective case in white PS design
Personal conclusion: Normal price for a pro controller, but many extras
Controllers are to me like toasters, remote controls or shoehorns – a daily and everyday object. Hardly a day goes by when I don’t tap around on a DualSense to distribute headshots or to start the latest series hits on Netflix.
While the regular DualSense is sufficient for me on Netflix, I now use the “SCUF Reflex FPS” for my headshots for a proud 280 euros. Compared to that, the features and packaging of the DualSense Edge look quite good.
The price of the Edge at 240 euros for a controller is quite high, but in comparison to competitors, it is more in the middle range when looking at other pro controllers.
A bit envious, I look at the fully adjustable paddles on the back. My SCUF has 4 paddles, but they are permanently connected to specific buttons. Also, the extra buttons that are attached under the sticks sound exciting.
I am skeptical about the adjustable trigger distances for L2 and R2 on the back. If it just blocks the long path of the triggers, it often doesn’t bring the desired effect in many games.
A “disadvantage” of the DualSense Edge is the controller bag. It is included in the packaging, thereby pushing the price up. Buyers could have saved about 20 euros here.
How the DualSense Edge ultimately stands in terms of quality will only become clear after release. But in terms of features and extras, the new Pro Controller of the PS5 can compete with the competition – “many extras” meets “normal price” for a Pro Controller of the PS5.
