To combat their problem with cheaters, Deadlock is now introducing an anti-cheat system. This system allows players who encounter cheaters to turn them into frogs. The software will be available a few days after the last update.
What is an anti-cheat system? An anti-cheat system is software that is integrated into games to ban players who gain an unfair advantage. Such software is essential for multiplayer games to ensure a fair playing environment for everyone.
A widely used anti-cheat system is BattlEye. It is used in games like GTA, but it is also controversial.
If you are not familiar with Deadlock yet, you can get a first impression with the trailer:
In Deadlock, you can play with cheaters as frogs
What kind of anti-cheat system is this? Deadlock’s anti-cheat system identifies cheaters and reports them directly to the other players in the match. Players are then given the choice of whether to kick the cheater out of the match or to allow them to continue playing, but in a modified form as a frog.
As a frog, the cheater’s capabilities are massively restricted and they can no longer use abilities or deal damage. The only thing a frog can do is hop around. However, opponents can still attack and kill the cheater-frog.
Cheaters will be banned regardless, the only question is whether the remaining players want to showcase the cheater a bit as a frog. There are no negative consequences for the other players if a cheater is found on their team.
Deadlock thus provides a creative engagement with the topic of cheating and offers the opportunity to compensate for frustration about cheaters with a few laughs.
Integrating an anti-cheat system in multiplayer games is absolutely necessary, but not everything goes smoothly with the integration of such software, as seen with Battlefield and its EA anti-cheat: Battlefield receives a major update 8 years after release – but not everyone is excited about EA
