Last week, a new series was launched on Netflix featuring two characters from the Hello Kitty universe embarking on an adventure. It looks like it’s made for little kids. However, according to viewers, there is much more to it.
What kind of series is it? My Melody & Kuromi is a Netflix exclusive series that appears to have come from a sugary sweet fever dream of a kindergarten child. It focuses on the two titular characters, who hail from the same universe as Hello Kitty.
My Melody opens a cake shop in Mariland. She is successful, while Kuromi struggles with her Japanese candy shop which has few customers. The two participate in a competition held by Patissier Pistachio.
However, strange things happen after My Melody finds a magical heart in the forest. The events affect the fate of Mariland.
The series has 12 episodes, each averaging just 14 minutes long. Both the episode duration and the cuddly look suggest that the series is aimed only at toddlers. Yet, even beyond that age group, the series is well received.
Adventures of My Melody & Kuromi are well received
How successful is it? In its opening week, My Melody & Kuromi became the second most-watched series on Netflix that was not originally produced in English (via Netflix Tudum). In the ranking, the series places ahead of Dandadan and Trigger, but falls short against the long-running Squid Game.
In the overall ranking, which also considers English-language series, the colorful series ranks 7th (via FlixPatrol).
What do viewers say? On IMDb, not many ratings have come in yet. 209 viewers feel that the series deserves an average of 8.4 / 10 (as of July 30, 2025, at 9:11 am). The final rating will likely change, but the initial ratings are a good indicator that the series is not just for toddlers.
