His answer:
I think the changes are good because too many were Masters. It should become harder. But I feel like the grind through the new system simply takes longer and therefore does not differentiate skill as much.
It’s also surprising that I get thrown into the same lobby with ex-Masters and Diamonds while I’m just starting back at Bronze 4… There seems to be something off about the matchmaking. I had really sweaty endgames, even in Bronze.
However, he also sees that low-rank players are having greater problems than ever:
[My girlfriend] for instance, who plays at a Gold level, is not having fun in ranked. I believe that low ranks could have simply been left as they were and later made more difficult in the high ELO area (from Diamond) – as they have done now.
In summary, he says: “It feels more like the ranked system of Overwatch, and that’s definitely skill-based. So it’s already a step in the right direction.”

Not only in the ranked mode have the top players of Apex Legends encountered adjustment difficulties. Just recently, professionals had to play in an official tournament on weaker PCs than they are used to at home.

Apex Legends is currently one of the most popular shooters on the market. As a Battle Royale, the competitive aspect can be frustrating for many players. With the new season, the ranked system has been thoroughly revised, and the top players are facing significant challenges. MeinMMO author Marko Jevtic will tell you more.
Apex Legends has been on the rise for some time; after 3 years, it has more players on Steam than ever before. This is partly due to excellent gameplay, weak competition, and continuous updates.
With the start of the latest season 13, Apex Legends brings comparatively few changes:
- The new hero Newcastle.
- Minor adjustments to the latest map, Storm Point.
- Abolition of the two-hour map rotation.
- There are no new weapons.
- The ranked system has been revised.
However, the last point turns out to be a true game changer. Especially the best players notice in the new ranked mode that old bragging strategies no longer work. Now, teamwork is more important than ever.
Here you can see gameplay featuring the new hero in Apex Legends:
Apex Legends is now more of a Battle Royale, less of a big deathmatch
What has changed in ranked? The changes to the ranked system may seem insignificant to outsiders and are also hard to explain. But competitive players immediately notice how fundamentally things have been overhauled.
Here are the main points:
- Kills and assists are practically worthless now if you don’t finish in the top 10.
- Top-3 placements with a few kills and assists from yourself and the entire team (thanks to the new “participation” points) are more lucrative than before.
- The entry costs for each rank have been revised.
- Players have lost more ranks between the seasons than usual, which means many high-ranked players now start in Bronze or Silver.
Detailed explanations can be found in this tweet:
What do these changes mean? Natalie Clayton from PC Gamer writes that the new ranked system of Apex Legends serves as an “ego check” for competitive players (via pcgamer).
Until now, in the ranked mode of Apex Legends, it was crucial for lone wolves to secure as many kills early on as possible to reach the maximum score per match. This made final match positions secondary. Those who gathered enough kill points could quickly climb the rank ladder – from the lowest Bronze rank all the way up to Master rank or even the top 750, the so-called Apex Predators.
Under the new system, this strategy no longer works at all. Instead, it is more important than ever to work as a team, to approach strategically, and to engage in battles with careful consideration. This also means that solo players will have a significantly harder time in ranked mode.
For Natalie Clayton, the changes mean, “Apex plays less like a deathmatch with 20 teams and more like a battle royale.”
On reddit, players summarize the changes as follows:
- “The new ranked system rewards teamwork and good positioning and accurately reflects your overall gaming skills.” (via reddit)
- “The new ranked system has shown that many people don’t realize there is a gray area between cowardly hiding the whole game and nonstop aggression.” (via reddit)
- “I love the changes. It now feels like a real ranked game mode.” (via reddit)
“This is exactly what we wanted, why is everyone upset?”
Overall, the changes are well received, but not every player is happy. With the extensive revisions come adjustment difficulties for the most loyal hardcore players.
In particular, players who previously excelled with aggressive gameplay and direct hot drops are complaining about the new rules. Ranked used to be too easy in the past, but now many find themselves in lower ranks than before.
This also aligns with the “ego check” that Natalie Clayton described. However, one player responds to these complaints with a question: “This is exactly what we wanted, why is everyone upset?” (via reddit)
I asked an old teammate who plays multiple accounts at the Master rank and has also been a ranked coach for some time: What do you think of the changes?
