Almost every game, whether on Steam or elsewhere, has a number of settings to customize the gaming experience. Most of them are quite standard options that everyone uses, but a player of a new RPG has now seen a strange feature for the first time in 42 years.
Which game is it? The old-school RPG Quartet has been available on Steam since August 26, 2025. You can choose between four different storylines and find out how they connect. It is labeled as a turn-based tactical RPG and is described by the game director as “Final Fantasy VI for adults”.
What setting has the player seen for the first time in 42 years? Reddit user Freddy-Pharkas posted in the gaming subreddit a screenshot of Quartet. This screenshot shows the setting “Oxford Commas”, which can be set to “On” or “Off”.
In the video, you can see the launch trailer for Quartet on Steam:
The Oxford Comma is according to the website Oxford-Royale.com a comma that is used in a list of three or more items before the last conjunction, such as “and” or “or”. The option toggles this comma on or off. Reddit user tampering demonstrates the effect of the Oxford Comma in a good example:
- “My Parents, Superman and Supergirl don’t believe in Oxford Commas.
- My Parents, Superman, and Supergirl don’t believe in Oxford Commas.“
In the first example sentence, it is stated that the parents, Superman, and Supergirl do not believe in the Oxford Comma. The second sentence, however, uses the Oxford Comma and states that both the parents and Superman and Supergirl do not believe in the Oxford Comma.
Is the Oxford Comma important for German grammar? No, the Oxford Comma does not exist in German, as no comma is generally placed before “and” or “or” in lists. A comma is only placed before conjunctions if they introduce subordinate clauses or interruptions.
Developer explains why this setting is in the game
What does a developer say about the setting? Under the Reddit post by Freddy-Pharkas, it was speculated whether programmers might have argued, and that’s why this option exists in Quartet. The director, EveryLittleDetail commented under the post and answered the question of why they added the setting: “Programmers want to do things to show that they can.”
Are there any other strange settings? Not in Quartet, but the game Thimbleweed Park on Steam has a crazy setting to hang toilet paper at gas stations in two different positions, as Reddit user Troldann commented.
Settings like the Oxford Comma definitely have their justification. After all, no one should think that parents are Superman and Supergirl. Whether it is important how a roll of toilet paper hangs is probably a matter of opinion.
On Steam, alongside old-school RPGs like Quartet, there are several other gems. A small team of developers has announced an RPG that visually looks like a spin-off of The Elder Scrolls: A tiny development team is creating an RPG for Steam that could visually also be an Elder Scrolls
