What is Destiny: Rising? Created by NetEase Games, with the help of Bungie – Destiny: Rising is a spin-off of the famous loot shooter Destiny.
Unlike the first and second major installments from Bungie, in this game from NetEase, you do not create a nameless Guardian, but take on the role of a celebrity known from the lore of the shooter. This includes personalities like Ikora, the Warlock Vanguard.
The game will currently only be available on mobile devices with Android and iOS operating systems – a console or PC release is not on the agenda. Initially, alpha and beta tests took place where fans could test the game, but now NetEase has announced that the global release is set for August 28, 2025.
Players can already pre-register for the start, and those who do will even receive rewards, but for many fans of the franchise, the game may still not be a part of their collection, and the reason for that is the monetization.
Many innovations, but off-putting for fans
What makes Rising different from Destiny 2? Destiny: Rising will be available for free to anyone interested, but with a catch: The game will have gacha. Gacha is considered by many to be an immoral monetization method, as it largely relies on gambling mechanics.
Fans can purchase packs or boxes and then have the chance to receive an item. However, if someone wants a specific cosmetic item, they need a lot of luck and money, as the chances of obtaining the desired item are often very low.
NetEase is also known for its controversial monetization, as fans have expressed their displeasure with pay-to-win regarding Diablo: Immortal.
However, the game features new weapon types and ultimates that have not been seen in the loot shooter before. Additionally, there will be new locations for fans to explore – so there is variety for veterans of the genre as well. But those who are not into gacha and character selection will likely give the game a wide berth.
