A new title is coming soon to Steam, which at first glance could also be a forgotten Disney classic. However, the premise shows that it is far from a child-friendly adventure.
What kind of game is it on Steam? On October 9, 2025, Bye Sweet Carole will be released on Steam, Xbox Series, PS5, and Switch. It is a narrative horror game inspired by old animation classics.
Players take on the role of Lana Benton, who lives in an orphanage in England in the 1900s. Her friend Carole Simmons suddenly runs away, and Lana believes that there is more to the disappearance.
She discovers letters in which Carole writes to an unknown person. Lana then ventures into the decaying kingdom of Corolla to uncover the mystery behind the disappearance. Along the way, she encounters all sorts of characters, such as the evil owl Velenia or the dreadful Mr. Kyn and his horde of nasty rabbits.
Disney Classic with Horror Elements
Why does it remind you of old Disney classics? Those who take a closer look at the trailer might find the visuals familiar. The game has been hand-drawn, drawing inspiration from “great animated films.”
The protagonist already looks like she could be from an old Disney classic, walking hand in hand with Snow White through the forest.
What is different from Disney? Unlike the friendly Disney films, Bye Sweet Carole has a palette of dark colors, indicating that it is not made for children. Although the story reads a bit like Alice in Wonderland, it actually conceals a horror story aimed primarily at fans of games like Little Nightmares.
How does it play? MeinMMO editor Jasmin Beverungen was able to test the game in a demo at gamescom 2025. In 30 minutes, she experienced the beginning of the game, which mainly consisted of platforming sections that required quick reactions.
Occasionally, there was a monster chasing Carole. So you had to flee quickly or jump off an object at the right moment to escape dangerous situations. There were also small environmental puzzles, although you shouldn’t expect them to be brilliant brain twisters.
But that’s not really necessary: Bye Sweet Carole thrives on its atmosphere and the incredible charm it radiates with every image and character. The horror factor is also not as intense as in Dead Space and co., but rather of a milder nature.
What unfortunately couldn’t be tested in the demo: Later in the game, you should be able to transform into a rabbit to escape tricky situations or talk to other rabbits. In this form, you are more vulnerable.
If you are looking for a brutal horror slaughter, Bye Sweet Carole is not the right option for you. There are other titles that will make your blood run cold with jump scares.
