The latest cinema movie of Dragon Ball is called Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero. The creator of the manga, Akira Toriyama, revealed before his death where the cumbersome name comes from.
Why is the movie titled so oddly? When pronouncing and reading the title, it is noticeable that the word “Super” appears directly twice in a row. In the weeks leading up to the Japanese theatrical release, the series creator revealed some details about the story, the characters, and also the cumbersome title.
The reason for the tongue twister is once again his memory:
By the way, the subtitle is “Super Hero”. I completely forgot that the main title of the movie is “Dragon Ball Super”. That’s why there are two “Super” in the title. I think everyone thought I did that intentionally because no one pointed it out to me. So it is my fault that the “Super” repeats.

So Toriyama simply forgot that the name of the anime was indeed included in the title. When the mangaka noticed the mistake, it was probably too late to change the title again.

The creator of Dragon Ball was a forgetful man
Is Toriyama really that forgetful? Throughout his career, Toriyama has lost track of numerous details regarding the Dragon Ball manga. With almost 40 years encompassing his career with Dragon Ball, it is understandable that some things can sometimes be forgotten. The creator of Dragon Ball passed away in March 2024.
For example, Toriyama has forgotten several characters over time. Lunch eventually stopped appearing, which is why Toriyama wrote her an ending of her own. The author even forgot an entire species. At some point, the beast-people disappeared, even though they were a fixed part of the world.
What is Super Hero about? The movie is the sequel to Dragon Ball Super: Broly and the last animated film created under the guidance of Akira Toriyama. The film stars Son-Gohan and Piccolo.
