Star Wars marked 1977 as the beginning of one of the largest franchises that still exists today. The brand enjoys great popularity and was a massive success with the very first film. The story, telling the conflict between the evil Empire and the good Rebels, captured the hearts of the audience.
The friendly heroes surrounding Luke, Leia, and Han Solo, along with villains like Darth Vader, surely contributed to this success. Star Wars remains commercially successful today and continues to generate significant revenue for the current rights holder, Disney, each year. However, George Lucas set a significant milestone with the first installment – he thought the film would be a flop.
