Every year, numerous new movies are released, some of which achieve great success at the box office. But which films have earned the most money to date? Let’s take a closer look.
No matter how good or bad the films are, at the end of the day, the producing studios aim to generate as much revenue as possible. For this ranking, we looked at the 10 most successful films of all time, adjusted for inflation.
This way, old films can be compared with new ones. This is relevant because the value of money changes and movie tickets become more expensive. If you disregard inflation, films released before 2000 hardly appear in the ranking.
When inflation is considered, the picture looks different. Therefore, for each placement, you will find the box office gross at release and what it would be today – the latter value is decisive for the ranking. All numbers refer to inflation as of 2024.
Rank 10: Star Wars – The Force Awakens
- Release Year: 2015
- Box Office Gross: 1.757 billion €
- Inflation-adjusted Box Office Gross: 2.251 billion €
In 2015, the long-awaited first part of the new Star Wars trilogy was released. It was no surprise that the film was a massive hit. The story introduced new characters like Rey, Finn, and Poe, while also bringing back some old figures. The actual plot was heavily influenced by Episode 4, which led to some criticism.
Generally, after the initial hype following the release, fans were disillusioned. Many had hoped for something different, something newer from Star Wars, but ultimately received just a rehash of what they already knew. However, this did not diminish the film’s success; it ranks 10th with an impressive figure.
