The developers of RuneScape 3 have reached out to their players. They clearly state that the MMORPG is in trouble due to microtransactions, and that these are harming the game. With a new plan, they want to save the MMORPG.
What is the problem? The developers of RuneScape 3 have addressed their players with a video message on YouTube. The very first sentence of the video is striking: “Our approach to microtransactions is harming RuneScape, and it is time for us to take action.”
The developers explain in the video that the microtransactions in RuneScape 3’s real-money shop represent the main source of revenue for the MMORPG. Although the MMORPG has been around for almost 25 years, this is increasingly becoming a problem for players.
The treasure hunter feature in RuneScape 3 allows players to gain in-game advantages such as bonus experience points and exclusive items with real money. As a result, more and more players (via Reddit) see a pay-to-win aspect in the game, which is also hidden behind a loot box mechanic.
While RuneScape 3 used to be a very grind-heavy game, there is now criticism (via Reddit) that some can simply shortcut by paying real money. Player feedback has been heard by the developers, and they are now presenting what should change.
Experiments and Community Engagement
What do the developers plan? The developers of RuneScape 3 want to find out which microtransactions are profitable through experiments, but also which ones are better received by players. For this, there are now three experiments (via YouTube):
- July Experiment: The “Treasure Hunter” will be completely disabled. Only stars and knowledge bombs can be purchased directly.
- August Experiment: During the next double XP event, the use of microtransaction-based training items (like variable items and decoys) will be disabled.
- September Experiment: Several cosmetic adjustments that were previously only available through the Treasure Hunter will be made available on the marketplace.
In addition to the monthly experiments, a long-term test of a game world without cosmetic content is to be initiated. Here, the developers want to find out players’ interest in such a world.
In each experiment, the community should provide feedback on the changes so that at the end of all tests, a new path can be taken. The developers also emphasize that their approach carries risks and is not perfect, but feedback from players is all the more important to achieve improvement together.
How the monetization of RuneScape 3 will change in the future depends heavily on the players. What is pay-to-win and what is not often sparks heated debates. With Throne and Liberty, this conflict after release led players to start another MMORPG: Throne and Liberty makes players crave another MMORPG, which may cost money but is less pay-to-win
