When the MMORPG Tera was released in 2011, it shone despite some weaknesses with its action-packed, robust fights. Now there are reports that a sequel is supposed to be in development.
What is known about Tera 2? The Korean publisher Krafton wants to expand its portfolio with a modern flagship MMORPG, as previous genre representatives like the first Tera from 2011 (at least on PC) or Elyon from 2021 have been discontinued in the meantime.
For the development of Tera 2, the developers from Bluehole are once again being sent into the race. The leadership is supposed to be taken over by veteran developer Kang Sang-wook, who was the first employee at Bluehole after the founders and earned his stripes at NCsoft before.
The development is said to still be in a very early conceptual phase. Apparently, part 2 will again rely on an action-packed combat system.
Elyon was Bluehole’s last MMORPG and unfortunately not a hit:
“Don’t mess it up!”
How does the community react to the announcement? In the various discussions on Reddit, two things are very clear: 1) It has spread that MMORPGs feel like they are in development for an eternity. 2) Asian MMORPGs still do not enjoy a good reputation in the West, for example, because they often appear for mobile devices or overdo it with monetization.
- youRaMF writes on Reddit: “I can barely wait to play this on my smartphone in 11 years.”
- Prev-em fears on Reddit also something bad: “We’re in for poorly running Unreal Engine 5 or Unreal Engine 6 PC-Mobile crossplay garbage.”
- BeAPo warns on Reddit: “Don’t get your hopes up too high, Elyon was supposed to be something like a sequel to Tera…”
- Thiel619 points out on Reddit hope: “They have one job: Don’t mess it up!”
What was special about Tera? The “True Action Combat” system. With just a few buttons, you could unleash powerful combo chains while also dodging attacks and maneuvers from the sometimes very mobile enemies. Every attack left an impression and the hit feedback was really good.
This made leveling up to the maximum level much more enjoyable than the actually extremely boring kill quests of Tera deserved. How important the MMORPG was for some fans is shown by the following article: Players say goodbye to the popular MMORPG after more than 10 years – This is what made TERA so special.
What do I need to know about Bluehole and Krafton? Bluehole is part of the holding company Krafton and celebrated its greatest success with the battle royale shooter PUBG: Battlegrounds, which has held the record for the most simultaneous active players on Steam for more than 7 years: In January 2018, there were temporarily 3.236 million players online in PUBG (source steamcharts.com).
Krafton not only acts as a publisher for online service games. Games like Subnautica or The Callisto Protocol are also part of the Koreans’ offerings. Currently, there is a lot of trouble regarding Subnautica 2, which is also being funded by Krafton: One of the most wished games on Steam is delayed, missing out on 213 million euros – now the developers are filing a lawsuit.
