The MMORPG Star Trek Online shows us the future: Starting May 28, there will be a new cash shop item called “Captain Alteration Token,” allowing players to change their characters. They can even customize the species.
This is the new feature:
- The new token costs 750 Zen. If you buy 3, you pay 1,500 Zen. The smallest Zen package costs €9.99 and grants 1,265 Zen.
- With the token, you can transform your Captain into the species and gender of your choice. Progress remains unchanged.
- This will also allow the possibility to play races that didn’t even exist when the character was created. However, there are limits; not every species is possible for every faction: A Vulcan working for the Dominion, for example, is excluded. The bridge officers cannot be transformed, only the Captain.
The MMORPG Star Trek Online was released in February 2010. The game is now available on PC, PS4, and Xbox One:
Regarding the traffic light: In Germany, the law on “self-determination regarding gender registration” passed the Bundestag only controversially on April 12, with 372 in favor and 251 against.
The law had significant societal implications. Politician Sahra Wagenknecht called it “absurd.” It is driven by “ideologically motivated politics for which one is celebrated in certain sects.” (via tagesspiegel)
In the MMORPG, the reasonable price is praised
This is how it is discussed in the MMORPG: At Star Trek Online, things are considerably less controversial:
User duncanidaho11, apparently a fan of Dune, says: The price is just right. Not too expensive, but not so cheap that one can constantly change species. He plans to change his character from a human to an alien. That fits better with his Captain now. And he can make good use of the extra slot for a trait.
Inferiority also praises the price: Some tokens in Star Trek Online are outrageously expensive, but this one is just right. Neither ridiculously expensive nor much too cheap.
A third user criticizes the limitations as too lenient: In the era of Kirk, hardly any Klingon or liberated Borg could have been part of the Federation.
No one speaks about the possibility of changing gender at will.
For those who want to experience sci-fi adventures on PC like in Star Trek, we recommend Stellaris, a strategy game on MeinMMO. It may not be exactly Star Trek, but it’s pretty close: In my favorite game on Steam, I consume the universe – resistance is futile
