Place 8: Thráin II.
Thráin was the son of Thrór and after the flight from Erebor came into possession of the Ring of Power, which Thrór handed to him. While he died in Moria, Thráin led his people into the battles of the ensuing war as the new king of the dwarves.
There he demonstrated his qualities as a leader, fighter, and tactician. Subsequently, he lived among others with his son Thorin in the Blue Mountains. Years later, his ring tempted him to return to Erebor. During the journey, however, Thráin was captured by the servants of Mordor and taken to Dol Guldur.
They took the ring from him but left him a map of Erebor and the key to a secret door. Gandalf later took both when he found the old dwarf, marked by forced labor and torture, in Dol Guldur. The key and map would prove crucial in the fight against Smaug, as told in “The Hobbit”.
