The head of Bethesda can imagine releasing The Elder Scrolls 6 surprisingly like Oblivion, but that will take some time

The Elder Scrolls 6 was announced around 8 years ago, back when E3 still existed. But even though so many years have passed, the release seems to be a while away.

What is the current status? In 2024, it was mentioned that TES 6 is already in a playable state. The developers are reportedly already playing the early version and exploring the world. However, the developers are aware that the hype surrounding the game is huge. 

That’s why the pressure is so great to deliver an almost perfect game. That takes time. And that’s exactly why Todd Howard stated in a recent interview with GQ:

The Elder Scrolls 6 is still a long way off. I preach patience. I don’t want the fans to become impatient.

He didn’t specify a timeframe. However, from this quote, one can infer that it will still take years before The Elder Scrolls 6 is released. However, the release might then happen differently than usual.

Shadowdrop of Oblivion was a successful experiment

What kind of release might TES 6 expect? As a last question, the GQ magazine couldn’t resist asking whether there could be a similar shadow drop for The Elder Scrolls 6 as there was for Oblivion. 

The remaster of The Elder Scrolls 4 was unexpectedly released back then with no major announcements. This pleased many fans but also upset some developers, who suffered from the shadow drop.

When asked if something similar could happen with TES 6, Howard responded:

You could say that was a test run. It worked well.

He does not deny the question and speaks of a successful test run. Thus, he does not rule out conducting a shadow drop for TES 6 as well. However, one should keep in mind that the new Oblivion was “only” a remaster and not a new main entry in the series.
