A new notice in the PlayStation Store is generating buzz among PS Portal owners. Apparently, Sony might be working on a feature that addresses the biggest drawback of the handheld: its reliance on its own PS5. This would make the device much more versatile.
What kind of handheld is this? Currently, the PS Portal serves exclusively as a streaming extension for the PlayStation 5. It cannot run games independently but streams content via Remote Play directly from the home console. Therefore, an active PS5 connected to the same network is always required.
Since November 2024, a beta has been running where PS Plus Premium members can stream select PS5 titles without a PS5 (via blog.playstation.com). However, this offer only covers titles that Sony has included in the PS Plus Premium Game Catalog. A new leak now suggests that this might change soon.
Notice in the PlayStation Store disappears, fans still hope for a big feature
What does the leak promise? On the official subreddit of the PlayStation Portal, user GetTheWetsOn shared a screenshot from the PS app. On the PS Store page for the game “Deliver at All Costs,” he discovered a line stating that one could buy the game and then immediately stream it on PS Portal or PS5, but only with PS Plus Premium.
The user also mentioned that the line was also found on the Store page of the “Dead Space” remake. He documented the hints, which were shortly thereafter removed from the PS Store.
How likely and trustworthy is the leak? GetTheWetsOn typically does not post leaks, yet several magazines, including Wccftech and PlayStation LifeStyle, believe there could be some truth to the statement.
They see a possible indication that Sony is preparing for streaming purchased games. So far, the PS Portal is primarily a remote play device for the console itself. However, there are already selected games in the cloud from the PlayStation Plus catalog.
From a technical perspective, cloud streaming on the PS Portal also seems feasible. Sony’s Senior Vice President Hideaki Nishino emphasized in 2023 that remote play and cloud gaming are fundamentally only differentiated by the location of the server (via wccftech).
This is how the community responds: On Reddit, the community reactions in the 186 comments show how much users wish for the feature (as of: 30.10.2025, at 15:15). Many also demand that Sony should allow playing already purchased titles without PS Plus Premium. If Sony actually brings the feature, the handheld would reportedly become more independent and the PS Plus Premium subscription would become significantly more attractive than before.
Sony has not yet commented on the current leak. Until confirmation, it remains a rumor that fans are eagerly following.
The fact that many players wish for this feature and even get creative is shown by another case: A trio successfully hacked the PS Portal to install their own games and make the device more independent.
