With Gold Road, the new feature of the Scripture is live on the servers of The Elder Scrolls Online as of June 3, 2024. However, this important gameplay feature of the chapter is not well received by many players. MeinMMO breaks down the points of criticism.
Even before the launch of Elder Scrolls Online: Gold Road on June 3, 2024, there was a negative sentiment in the community. After all, the Westmarches, the new area, appear to be quite small. This is particularly noticeable when riding past several way shrines that are only a few meters apart.
Unfortunately, the most important Gold Road innovation for the player experience of the Elder Scrolls MMORPG is also not received well: the Scripture. This feature allows you to customize skills from various skill lines according to your own needs for the first time. There are said to be more than 4,000 combinations for the eleven new skills.

What are parts of the community criticizing? Currently, several discussions about the Scripture are taking place in the official Elder Scrolls Online forum. The following points, in particular, are causing frustration or disappointment among players:
- Anyone who wants to use the Scripture and the associated new skills must purchase Gold Road. Since the customizable skills would not only provide more options for combat but also obvious advantages, this would clearly be a case of Pay2Win in the context of PvP.
- With the quests related to the Scripture, you are guaranteed one script per day. Other quests are said to have a 25 percent chance of dropping a script. Additionally, you can obtain scripts from merchants or through the Endless Archives. Scripts are only unlocked for the character. Those who play multiple characters will likely have to brace for a tough grind.
- The quests surrounding the Scripture are described as “tedious, boring, and annoying”. The distances between objectives can be quite long. Furthermore, it involves returning to old areas like Auridon.
Some buyers of Gold Road are disappointed with the grind factor and the gameplay content associated with the Scripture. Others who have not yet purchased Gold Road are considering quitting ESO altogether because they fear that the already improvable balance in PvP will become much worse from now on.
How does MeinMMO editor Karsten Scholz assess the situation? I was able to dive into Gold Road for a few hours last night and can confirm that the quests revolving around the Scripture are only somewhat enjoyable. You really travel around a lot without experiencing anything exciting, and it goes back to old zones way too often for my taste.
Regarding the Pay2Win accusation, I think we should wait and see if the new skills really prove to be the clearly best option for PvP, without which you would have no chance. This risk has existed in the past as well, for example, when new classes were introduced through a chapter that came with their own skill lines and synergies.
In my experience, the majority of Tamriel adventurers are really into the PvE and story content of the MMORPG, and they usually deal with such simple challenges that it will unfortunately hardly matter how powerful the Scripture skills turn out to be.
