The final trailer of the Opening Night Live of gamescom 2024 showcased a new installment in the Mafia game series – and this one is taking a completely different direction than its predecessors.
The action game published by 2K Games puts you in the role of a gangster involved in organized crime since the first part. So far, the series has always led us to a fictional city in the United States. Mafia has always felt like “the little brother of GTA” because we have an open world, the life of a criminal, and numerous shootouts and chases.
The newly announced “Mafia: The Old Country” takes you to Italy, specifically Sicily in the 1900s. This marks the first time the series leaves the USA and the American urban jungle that we will also experience in GTA 6.
A fresh and unused setting
The Italian mafia is a polarizing topic in various media. Numerous films, series, and games address the life and actions of organized crime – glorifying theft, murder, and trafficking in illegal substances.
However, most of these films, series, and games only portray the Italian mafia in the USA. If you take a look at the best mafia movies according to our colleagues at Moviepilot, you will see titles like The Godfather, GoodFellas, Casino, or Donnie Brasco. Some of the most famous mafia films even have isolated scenes in Italy, but hardly any predominantly take place in Sicily.
Although the mafia is not an innovative theme for films, series, and games, Sicily is indeed a very unused and fresh-looking setting.

An iconic game series takes a new direction
Mafia is an iconic game series, at least for fans. The action game will probably never be mentioned alongside big names like Elder Scrolls, BioShock, or GTA, yet the first part particularly gained some fans. This is also reflected in the still really good Metacritic rating of 88.
I have enjoyed playing the Mafia games and also like to watch corresponding films. Therefore, I find it very interesting that the game series dares to take a new path with the new title and leave the USA. I am very much looking forward to the Sicilian setting.
For years, there has been the thought game in my circle of friends: “What if GTA were to be set in Berlin, Paris, Tokyo, Rio de Janeiro, Rome, or somewhere else in the world, instead of always in America?” Although we will probably live again in a fictional city in “Mafia: The Old Country”, at least it will be a city in another country, in a new setting.
