Firefly, the developers of the Stronghold series, have announced an interesting MMO called Romans: Age of Caesar. Here, you build cities together with other players, manage them, and trade or wage wars with other metropolises on an online continent.

What is Romans: Age of Caesar? It is a city-building strategy game designed as an MMO. This game is not about wandering the land as a hero and defeating monsters together with others. Instead, you build cities together with other players on a large online continent. At the same time, you compete against other city builders. Everyone tries to achieve the position of Imperator through their achievements and maintain that position. The game plays out similarly to other city-building titles:
- You collect resources
- With these resources, you build buildings
- You trade with other players
- It is necessary to build defenses
- Barbarians repeatedly raid your lands
- You raise armies to confront threats
How does the interaction with others work? You do not build your city alone, but select up to 15 players who will support you. You distribute the tasks and resources so that each player can contribute their part to the construction. One takes care of city planning, while another focuses on defense.
Furthermore, you meet other players who, just like you, are building their own cities. Whether you establish diplomatic relations with them and trade, or whether you go to war against them, is up to you.
On which platforms will the MMO be released? Romans: Age of Caesar is set to be released for PC and mobile devices. It will support crossplay, allowing you to manage your city anytime and anywhere.
Many questions remain unanswered
When is the release? The online game is supposed to start later this year. However, a specific date has not yet been announced.
What about Alphas and Betas? On the official website of Romans: Age of Caesar, it is possible to sign up for a closed alpha. However, it has not yet been said when the testing phase will start. Nothing is known about a beta either.
That’s why many questions remain unanswered: In the press release, the developers revealed very little about the game. There is also no gameplay material or screenshots available. Therefore, we will have to wait and see what Firefly announces in the coming weeks and months about Romans: Age of Caesar to get an idea.
Why is it something special? It is the first major city-building MMO in the West. While Korea already had Civilization Online, we had to wait for something like this here. Romans: Age of Caesar aims to change that.
