In Fortnite: Battle Royale (PC, PS4, iOS, Switch & Xbox One), SMGs were hardly effective for a long time. This is changing thanks to a buff and the new Tommy Gun. Even Ninja loves these weapons now!
SMGs – The formerly unloved shelf warmers in Fortnite: In Fortnite, you have various weapon categories to eliminate your enemies. Some weapons, like shotguns and assault rifles, are particularly effective and popular. However, some weapon types are less liked.
Shotgun was usually better: Especially the SMGs (submachine guns) were hardly found in the players’ arsenals for a long time. They only worked well at close range due to their poor accuracy, while the infamous one-shot shotguns were usually better.
Buff brings improvement: But thanks to a new weapon and a significant buff, even top players like Ninja can’t resist the SMGs anymore.
From trash to gold!
Buff with update 4.5: To break the dominance of the shotguns and make the SMGs more popular again, there were some significant changes in the update 4.5:
- Shotguns dealt less damage to buildings and you found less ammunition for them
- The tactical and suppressed submachine guns became stronger, more accurate, and could be fired more effectively from the hip.
SMGs have thus become much more important in close combat than before.
And then there was the new Drum Gun. The “Drum Gun” is inspired by the famous Thompson submachine gun (Tommy Gun) from the 1930s. It is a mix of an assault rifle and a submachine gun, firing quickly, though quite inaccurately, but dealing a decent amount of damage. And with the 50-round drum magazine, you rarely need to reload.

Massive SMG kills on Twitch: Ninja, the most famous Fortnite player, has already discovered the Drum Gun for himself. In a particularly impressive video, he takes out a whole squad of enemies using the Tommy Gun and a tactical SMG. This example demonstrates impressively how the formerly worst weapons in the game improve significantly through buffs and new additions.
